Thanks for the response Unbeldi. I am familiar with the permeability - impedance link.

Your belief that the inferior core material was used because of war shortages certainly sounds plausible to me especially as red stripe bell motors appeared during or immediately prior to (US) WW2.

Sorry if I appear to flog a dead horse sometimes but I like to know why the horse is dead – not just that it is dead.
