For converting a 304 to a 302 equivalent:

502-400-402, Issue 5, Table D shows using the GND terminal for tying the two "extra" ringer wires. The yellow line cord wire also connects to GND, but the yellow is not connected at the wall.

I found another way to do it in BSP 63.412, Issue 4, 5-15-47:

                    1.06  Although the 302 type telephone set is normally used
                             at ring party stations, the 304 set may be used
                    by making connections as follows:

                    Green mounting cord conductor to RR.
                    Green-Red conductor from plunger contacts to RR.
                    Yellow conductor from condenser to L1.
                    Slate and Slate-Red conductors from ringer to L2.

Looks like the 'Ring Party' configuration shown in C38.555.

I used the 'Individual or Bridged' configuration on my 5304C.

Nice to know I have other options.

I'm surprised that C63.412 doesn't mention individual configuration. If using the wiring as shown for ring party, you could connect the green and yellow together at the wall, or you could move black ringer wire from GND to K and red ringer wire from K to RR. Is that how it is shown in C38.555?

I'm also surprised that WR-63.411, Iss. 1, 4-23-43 does not mention 304s at all. This BSP is called "Telephone Sets Converted to 302 Types, Connections."

WR practices were issued during the war, when there were shortages of phones and everything else. They are always on blue paper.

In WR-C63.411 the following sets can be converted: 305, 401, 410, 411, 440, 441, 460, 461, 462, 105, 205 and 208.

The 105, 205, or 208 sets converted to single line are recoded S327A, B, C or D. (The 105, 205 and 208 are multi-line phones that resemble 102s.) These converted are sometimes seen on Ebay (with the selector removed.)

That is apparently the same wiring as C63.412. Does C38.555 show a diagram for bridged ringing? (I don't see C38.555 in the TCI library.)

I restored C38.555 from a back-up and corrected a typo in the title of WR-63.411, so they should be easily found in the Library.

If you post or email a copy of 63.412 (or any other documents), I'll add them to the Library.

Paul, I found C38.555 by searching for just C38. It was listed as C38-555.

I have corrected the WR BSP #---it should have been WR-C63.411.

If you wire a 302 or 304 for ring party, you have to put green and yellow together at the wall, just as you do for a hardwired 500D.

If you wire a 302 or 304 for tip party flat rate, you have to put red and yellow together at the wall.

C38.555 is showing that if the set is wired (according to Table B) for individual lines, the yellow wire is connected to B on the 42A connecting block at the wall. If you are using triple station wire (red, green and yellow--no black), then this would be a vacant terminal. You don't want to connect the yellow wire with the red (or with the green) because the yellow is connected to GND in the set, along with the slate and slate-red ringer wires. So if you connect the yellow to anything at the wall, then you are shorting out the line.

So here is the wiring for individual lines as shown in the BSP cited by zaphod01:

Mounting cord in set:
Red to L1
Green to L2Y
Yellow to GND [or taped and stored]

Ringer:
Red to L1
Black to K
Slate to GND
Slate-Red to GND

Capacitor:
Yellow to L2Y
Slate to K

Switchhook lead:
Green-Red to L2Y

Mounting cord at Connecting Block [wall]:
Red to R [RING]
Green to G [TIP]
Yellow to B [vacant terminal]

So there are 4 wires inside the set that have to be moved from factory wiring (tip party ID) when using it on a non-party line:

Red ringer lead from K to L1
Black ringer lead from GND to K
Slate ringer lead from M to GND
Slate-red ringer lead from RR to GND

And the yellow line cord wire is not connected at the wall, or connected to a vacant terminal.

David....you are the MAN!!! Normally when I get a 304 I just part it out. Sunday I found a truly amazing metal 302...all dates match  6/41, even the dial. Paint was a 9.5 out of 10. The cords were ruined, but this baby shines....BUT the 302 was a 304.
