Title: *** The "Find of the YEAR" for 2011 ***
Post by: AE_Collector on February 08, 2014, 09:09:40 PM
We started early this year (2014) by running a "Find if the YEAR - 2013" as a run off for all of the contest winners from 2013. Then we went back and did the same for 2012. Now it is time to retroactively vote for the "Find of the YEAR - 2011".

Take a few minutes to go through the list below. John "TelePlay" has created one post per entrant along with brief details, a link to the original nomination and the seperate topic on CRPF if there was one, and one picture of each contestant. The pictures are from the Photobucket site that John maintains of all Find of the Month winners as well as the winners of all of the "Auction Contests".

This time there are twelve contestants to choose from so lets again do THREE VOTES EACH and see who wins the coveted "Find of the YEAR - 2011".

If you inadvertently vote for less than three contestants, click the "Remove Vote" button at the bottom left of poll and then place all of your votes again.

Thanks John for taking the time to put this Find of the YEAR contest together.

Terry

Here is what I consider my find of the month, an NOS ivory soft plastic 554 from 3-59. It came complete with the original box and backboard wrapped in the original packing material. The auction ended at $20.50 and the shipping was $15.95. With what NOS phones with the box have been bringing lately, it was a total surprise to me.

These arent pretty but I'm sure to all of the collectors they have much potential to be pretty. Mostly D-1's with a few B-1's. I've sold a few on Ebay already, but in all I had 28 phones total, 4 more incomplete phones, and 25 bases I scored at an estate sale for $80..

I was at a local antique shop today (I check it out about once a month) and found a D-1 "202" with an E-1 seamed handset, #4 dial with a celluloid number plate in great condition, and it had the 684 subscriber set still attached....all for the price marked of $45.  Getting to the check-out I remembered that they will give a 10% discount if you ask...that's all they're allowed to give without calling the booth owner.  So I got it for $40.50 plus tax...

I was in west Chicago this weekend and found a lot of phones on Craigslist for 25.00.  I bought a 302 ivory metal, D-1, 500 without a headset, f-1 headset and a spitcup headset.  My question is, are 302 ivory metal phones rare?  Hard to find?  I never seen one before.  The only thing is that its missing the dial.  Its in decent shape for its age.  The date 1940 is found all over the phone.  For 25.00 dollars I could not pass it up.

Eric posted this about it:

Well folks, for over a year I've read all of your stories about finding amazing phones for next to nothing.  Well, it finally happened to me . . .    As we were walking up an aisle my girlfriend pointed to a garbage can (like an oil drum) with phones by it.  There was a cardboard box and an insulated freezer bag on the ground beside the garbage both filled with phones . . .    As we walked by it I saw what looked like an ivory G-type handset, so I decided to go see what phone it was attached to.  As I dug through the freezer bag I found a WE white TouchTone Trimline, so I pulled it out.   That revealed what looked to be the dial of a cruddy beige AE80, but I unburied it anyway.  The first thing I got out was a handset with a straight neutral gray cord attached to it.  When I saw that cord I literally started shaking with excitement.  What I dug out of that bag was a beige 1954 500 with both neutral gray cords.

Found all of these in 2 wooden crates in an OLD Pullman (yes, Railroad) car. This car was sooo old that it was made entirely out of wood! Frame and everything! And yes, the roof was coming in, etc.  What a shame; these would have looked grand in their day. Most are beyond repair from shrinkage and weathering. I did salvage a few of them though.

Latest antique store find. What Have I got? Any ideas? I know it is a 1941 Monophone in mahogany?  I think is what the brown is called.  Seems to be in excellent condition.  all there and even the cords look great.  Handset cord I believe is original and in excellent condition.  Not sure the line cord is original, but i do know the line cord is old.  4 prong not so old. (I remember installing them, so they can't be to old.....  LOL).  Phone is in untouched condition.  just as I found it on the shelf.  Cost me $40.

Here is the original Find if the Month nomination:

Larry posted this about it:

I bought this phone last week for about $38 (incl shipping), and it arrived this Monday.  The seller stated that this phone had served as a stage prop for many years.

The finish is in excellent condition, but it appears to have been repainted at some point.  The paint job is so good, that I suspect that it was a factory job.  The base, dial, and receiver capsule are all dated 3 30.  The F1 transmitter is from 1939.  The handset is in mostly great condition, but there are a few cracks and chips in the transmitter cup and a small chip in the receiver cap, and the receiver cap spacer ring was full of gouges, so I replaced it with a moderately better one.  The cords were both repros and tattered, so I replaced them.  The bottom plated is covered with (moth eaten) wool felt.  I added some cork pieces to keep the phone from sliding.

The dial has "2HB" on it finger stop.  The face plate is non-notched and in good condition, but the numbers are somewhat worn.  The '1' is barely visible.  The dial turns smoothly and clicks loudly enough to bother the neighbors.

Okay! We have a winner of the Find if the YEAR - 2011 contest. ESalter has taken the lead by enough to declare him the winner (even though his Find wasn't an AE product :). )

Eric's Rose Beige 1954 500 with gray straight cords was "Found" for free in the garbage at a Radio Swap Meet. What better find than rescuing one so close to disappearing into a land fill!

Congratulations Eric for having the "Find of the YEAR for 2011"!

The order for the 2011 Find of the Year trophy has been placed and as soon as the 3D printer spits it out we will present it to Eric right here.

Well thank you very much, folks!  That phone is certainly one of my favorites and it definitely has one of the best stories to go along with it of anything we have at the museum.  It's hard for me to believe it's been over 3 years ago now that we found that phone.  To be fair, my girlfriend Jessica deserves to be the winner here, she spotted the box of phones first. :)

Time to present Eric with his trophhy for having won the "Find of the YEAR - 2011".

In my last post here I failed to mention Eric's close competitors in this contest. Stockdale and his &$@?& (don't mind me, just wish I had found this one) Mahogany AE 40 gave Eric the toughest competition though Larry's 102-B1 with E1 was in third place with everyoneelse not that far behind. Everyone was a winner in their particular month which made being te winner of the Find of the Year just that much bigger.

Thanks to all of the competitors and to everyone who took the time to check out the competition and place their votes.

So congratulations again Eric! Heres the trophy that John slaved away for months creating. (Thanks John)
