Title: Unwanted POP-UP's
Post by: Dan/Panther on December 19, 2013, 11:04:29 PM
All of a sudden I keep getting these damned Pop-ups. I have Pop-up blocker set, but I still get them.
Very annoying. Can anyone tell me how to stop them. virus, ad-ware, and spyware scans do not find them.

AdBlockPlus, works great for me, not an ad in sight across the whole internet... ;D

Amen, twocvbloke.. Though, sometimes on a rare case I do get an add, but what is weird, is it's on this sight!

All you have to do is a quick refresh and you won't be bothered.

I'm pretty sure it's an issue with your machine, Dan.  Not getting any pop-ups on this site.  Anyone else?

Dan:

There are various types of Adware which will place pop-ups on your screen. The worst thing is in many cases, that is not all they do to your machine - often they include key loggers and much more.  Get a copy of Adaware Free and do a scan of your system. It should rid you of them. Once again, as with antivirus products, make sure you have the latest updates installed before you run them.

Also, check your recently installed programs for Nav-Links and Websteroids. Several software distributors have been known to include them as secondary payloads on legitimate software installs and if you don't watch the install very carefully, they will install along with the desired software. Fortunately, in their case, they can be un-installed from Control Panel. As they masquerade as "legitimate" programs, A/V and Adware products won't find them. They do no harm to your machine, but are a pain!

Nav-links in addition to pop-ups will also randomly highlite phrases on your screen and turn them into hyperlinks to questionable sites which will show pop-ups when you mouseover them..

I was curious about the ads on the forum, and I wanted to see what the ad said this time. It was for Anti-Malware software. How ironic...

Ahhh, now there is a good point. Google Ads can be turned off by going to your Google configuration.  It will also add pop=ups, especially when using Google Chrome.

I don't use Google chrome because they are too intrusive on the privacy of Internet users.. I use only IE or Firefox .. Pay attention when you install a software because sometimes the software itself install Google chrome and a toolbar and often we have not need a tool bar.

On my Androids, the ads I see on this forum are always for mobile phones, VoIP services and the occasional "Click here for a free virus scan!!!", yeah, riiiiiight.... :D

I would prefer to use a different browser on my 'droids, but Firefox for Android is rubbish (kind of like the desktop version, it's never happy!!), so I just put up with ads, I on't use my android devices much for internet browsing anyway... :)

Since it's Green Card related, maybe it's the NSA letting you know that your "domestic" servants need to be registered?  Like the Indian diplomat that only pays her servants a couple dollars an hour?

I got an e-mail today from someone that is not a member of the Forum.  She said that when she viewed the Merry Christmas topic she got a warning from Google Chrome stating there was malware coming from page 6 of the topic:

The response in part is:

Content from planetsmilies.net, a known malware distributor, has been inserted into this web page. Visiting this page now is very likely to infect your Mac with malware.
Malware is malicious software that causes things like identity theft, financial loss, and permanent file deletion. Learn more"
This is the link of the infected page (page 6 of the topic):

Perhaps a photo is posted off-site?  Didn't we experience this same thing some time ago?  From Planetsmiles?  Will have to double check photos and or signatures for possible links to this site.

Dennis, it's the one from CraigT, right below "Merry Christmas from Michigan." On dialup I just get a red X, but mousing over it I get planetsmilies as the link to it.

Dan, when I worked in IT at the school system I always used the free version of malwarebytes and did a Quick Scan and it worked wonders. As Dave said, always make sure it's updated to the latest definitions before you scan. You'll be amazed what you find.

I can't see anything referring to Planetsmilies, either ABP is doing it's job, or Avast's own malware thing is blocking it...

Dennis;
It's not CRPF, it's my machine, But no program I install ever finds the bug. I'm downloading Ad Block Plus, right now.

Twas 5 Days before Christmas,
and all through D/P's house.
Not an ad was to be found,
Not even as small as a mouse.
All the websites they visit,
Where as clean as a bell.
Because, with Ad Block Plus installed,
They all went straight to Hell.

Merry Christmas..

Thanks for the laugh, Dan.  Glad you have been able to rid your computer of the Ad junk. :)

I went to the site. Clicked on the download for Ad Block plus. It downloaded, installed with just one click, no saving, no installing. Great to have the Pop-ups gone.
What a miserable idea they are in the first place. I would not buy ANYTHING from a Pop-up ad.

The sad thing is, there are people out there using the internet who will click on as as they look so tempting, and that's pretty much how these fraudulent people get their fish on the hook as it were, but, they must be making money if they're paying for ad space, whether or not it's legitimate... :-\

Unfortunately, the internet is like commercial television & radio, there's plenty of good stuff out there, you just have to sift through the ads to get to it... :D

No, and I'm using Adblock Plus, but the only ad on this forum is the blurb across the top.  Adblock blocks even that.  I seem to remember that planetsmiles or whatever it's called appeared one other time in another thread.

Question?

It seems one needs both programs, "Malwarebytes" (http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html) and "Adblock Plus" (http://download.cnet.com/Adblock-Plus-for-Internet-Explorer/3000-12512_4-75938563.html) to be totally clean and clear.

Malwarebytes to scan and remove the bad stuff after updating the definitions and then running the scan and then Adblock Plus to keep running in background to keep pop ups from appearing. Would that be correct?

Hi Dennis:

Found it in a message from Craig T. I have removed the link...

Yes, we had it happen once before. Someone used a PlanetSmilies smiley in a message and it began triggering several users scanners. I removed it, too.

It wasn't an image but a smiley in both cases. (Ok, guys I realize smilies are images, but I mean a phone image, etc.). Planetsmilies has only smilies, but they are known as a source for malware, which is why they trigger such warnings.

So, I must ask that you all avoid using smilies from Planetsmilies, as we know they can cause this problem. At any rate, the offending link has been found and removed...

They can be removed, but the fact they are there until found could scare some well intentioned users from using the forum in the meantime.

Dave

I like Adblock because it works well, and it also tells you how many ads are being blocked.  On this forum, it's only one, on Facebook, I've seen it go as high as 60+.

I do.too. I have seen using it a long time with Firefox - so long, I almost forget I am using it. It is seldom that an ad slips through! It is one of those add-ons you can basically install and forget about.

The only additional smilies I use are stored on my personal webspace, I never use any website that only allows you to use smilies that are attached to a code to send you to their website, they're not trustworthy, that's why I save ones I like and store them for my own use, much better than trusting known malware websites...
