Grounding the ATA or voip line?

The P.O.T.S. used a ground connection to the ring wire, the magneto systems did usually not, if they not had single wire or grounded ringing. When you get VOIP the system is completely ungrounded, how good is that? Statics etc.  Mine are not grounded, and everything works fine. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! or maybe we should?  Ff we connect a resistor between ground and Ring, maybe as high as 33k it may make the potential to ground stable but should not affect anything else??? or?  pros an cons???
