What kind of noise should the dial be making when it's returning to it's initial position? Mine seems to sound a little odd after some use.
It's a rebuilt dial..
I'll try to record it..
Depending on the number of the dial, some of the earlier 302's, the dial will give a slight Tick, Tick, Tick sound upon return.

This one makes the tick and I expected that, but theres a mechanical moan of some sorts.
It still returns at the perfect speed though, and otherwise runs fine.
Sounds like a gummed up Governor.
The dial can use a cleaning.

It might need some cleaning and lubrication.
It looks rather clean, and it was supposed to have already been worked on.

Bad angle i know, i haven't taken the phone apart again.
I can't tell by looking. Maybe a sound recording would help.

That actually sounds like a normal #5 dial. #6 dials were not any quieter.
Western Electric dials all sounded like coffee grinders compared to AE dials. It was not until the #7 and #8 dials that they finally got the mechanical noise quieted down.
That being said, let's see what some others think.
I agree, Bill. The dial sounds like a normal #5 to me. Actually sounds pretty good.
Ok, if it's normal and sounds good then I'm happy.
I'm used to my model 500's quiet dial, and just wanted to make sure.
older 500 dials are loud too but you have a 70's model they are quiter
mmd;
I think maybe you should send the dial toi me....
