Title: Very rare S&H modell 26 on Ebay, with issues
Post by: Matilo Telephones on January 23, 2014, 08:45:14 AM
The seller sais he cannot judge its originality, but I wonder who worked on this telephone. Probably this ignorance is far from real. This looks like a pristine modell 26 at first sight, but at a second glance it really has issues.

Here is a link to the ad:

RARITAT-altes-Telefon-W26-W-26-Modell-26-mit-Schlitze-S-H-sehr-selten-TOP (http://www.ebay.de/itm/RARITAT-altes-Telefon-W26-W-26-Modell-26-mit-Schlitze-S-H-sehr-selten-TOP-/151211574169?pt=Antike_B%C3%BCrotechnik&hash=item2334e98399)

The first thing that struck me was the end caps. They are for a later model. The ring for the mouth piece should be smooth, made of metal painted black. This is a bakelite ring with a small ridge running around it. The receiver end should also be smooth, made of brown celluloid.
Furthermore the dates of the different pieces are very close together (in my experience the different dates should have a much larger spread).
The diagram on the inside bottom plate is conspiciously missing. Cords seem new, no cord protection where the cord enters the receiver.

Second glance, the screw on the cradle is a hectagonal bolt. It should be a screw. All the screws have small gelaming nicks, from a recent contact with a tool. Shame. Should have been more carefull! The number shield on the dial has the S&H company name. I have never seen this on a modell 26. It seemed out of place to me.

Third glance, the date stamp on the bottom has the letter U. U is for 1939. Certainly not for 1926, 27 or 28. And the type Fg Tist 66av is not for a modell 26. Google it, it is for later versions of the W28.

The bracket for the cords, running out of the back, is different on my modell 26 and different on my very early W28. It is a later model.

So basically it is a modell 26 mostly, but someone has don his best to add missing pieces and make it look like an original w26.

For how much will it go? It has a bid of over 200 euro now. Last original modell 26 i saw on Ebay went for 404 euro.
