It feels much better knowing that is a purpose built monstrosity.

I wonder if the same company made these nauseating contraptions?
My neighbors down the street have one. To make matters worse, she seriously talked about turning it into a lamp!  :-X
I think I like the "eleph-phone" better. At least it's something (an animal),  and not just a long, meaningless, ugly-as-hell stick.

In the 1970's you could buy the pillar phone, elephant phone, elephant phone as a table and a few other similar sets at JC Penny.
I always assumed they came from the same company.

turning it into a lamp might improve it. These were poorly built telephones.

I had the opportunity to buy one at a yard sale many years ago, but I passed because it was so poorly built.
And because it was so hideous.

Woe what is that supposed to be? Pulled from a fire in a paint factory? Yeah that's hideous.

Hideous, and grimy.

That phone should be taken out to a field and shot!

Then hurried 6 feet down. With a head stone saying some moron ruined my life.. That's horrible.

Check for signs of life and when there are none, as expected, declare it an organ donor.

That phone reminds me of my Army drill sergeant.  When something would frustrate him, he would say "Well, I'll be dipped in liquid ___t.  That phone looks like it went along for the ride.

Best use for that phone would be as a subset for a B1, D1, candlestick or other such pre-302 telephones missing but needing a ringer and induction coil talk circuit for proper operation. Toss the housing, dial, handset and find/build a nice wood box to hold/enclose the useful base. Wiring it up would be the interesting part of the project.
