Terry,
What were the original # 1 tall cradles made of. I don't know the difference in the repro and the originial.
I have a broken one in cast something( zinc or alum.) and another in brass. I can't seem to find much on this subject. I looked in the TCI yahoo goup Singingwires and it didn't help much. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!  stub

 From Terry:
        Hi Ken,
I don't know a lot about it but I suspect any brass cradles are repro. PhoneCo
or someone had them made. I have one of them. The repro switch contained inside
is a dead give away that the whole thing is repro.

Real cradles are pot metal or bakelite. Those are the only variations that I
have seen that I would say are real. I don't know the progression but I would
suspect that bakelite cradles came first and then eventually the switch to pot
metal to give them better strength. Just a guess though....

I don't know that tall cradles are only Am Elect. By the time Am Elect was
marketing phones like the 1A, AECo owned them. So I would have assumed that AM
Elect AND AECo 1A sets (and others) would have used similar height cradles at
the same time. I have assumed that tall cradles came first and then the shorter
cradles but it is hard to say for sure. I wonder if the early 1A sets had tall
cradles to give the handset more clearance from the desk but as other taller
variations like the AE7 became available the added height wasn't needed so they
had shorter cradles. Then maybe the short cradle was found to be better looking
on the 1A so eventually it was adopted. All just speculation.

There seem to be quite a few AE sets with tall cradles on ebaY lately.

The cradle on my AE 3 is very similar, but it curves outward, away from the wall.

 LarryInMichigan ,
Larry , Doesn't your cradle attach with 3 screws instead of a brass ring ? I haven't looked at the insides of mine in a long time and can't remember for sure.    stub

Yes, it attaches to the inside of the phone with three screws.  This was the first time that I looked at it.

LarryInMichigan,
I believe the AE- 8 attaches the same way.  stub

Is that on bakelite or pot metal? I'm guessing bakelite though there are broken potmetal cradles out there as well.

Terry,
Do you think this is a (Tall boy) 1A by looking at the lenght of the cradle in picture 005 ?
Here's a bakelite short cradle with ribs under it for strenght - 001

The repro cradles are held on with a large hex nut and do not have the lug for the screw tha goes to the base. The shorter brass cradle was made from a bakelite one and is rather chunky looking
