Title: F.D.N.Y. Historians
Post by: Dan/Panther on July 17, 2010, 03:06:18 PM
Are there any New York City Fire Department historians that can help me identify the ring I have.
I bought a lot of equipment owned by a former Bell Labs engineer, and in the lot was the ring shown below.
Check out the post on what else was in the mix.

3 of the 4 numbers add up to "9-11". Along with the FDNY that is a bit of a coincidence?

That was my thought exactly 2 towers on 911.
I've been in contact with a former FDNY foreman, and he thinks it's the badge number of the fireman. No engine, or ladder company with those numbers.
It's solid silver.
I also found out some very interesting facts about FDNY and my family and William Baldwin the actor.
The first Firefighter to die in Brooklyn was named William Baldwin, January 20, 1880, William Baldwin the Actor was from New york, same as firefighter, William Baldwin (the actor) his original vocation was to be a firefighter, we ( Myself, and the guy helping me research) think both of the William Baldwins are related, William Baldwin the actor also starred in the movie backdraft. William Baldwin the actors Grandmother was named Martineau, My Grandmothers maiden name was Martineau,  they were related, first cousins, there Mothers were sisters. To make a long story short, I'm related the the acting family of Baldwins.

Huh, uh, wha, huh, snort, uh,....

You are one funny dude D/P. :)

I've never seen a ring like that but guess is badge number as well.  Assuming they do individual badge numbers.  I had a badge once, C23 was the number.  Needless to say it was a small town.

Just guessing, but the "9" could be a particular Engine House and the "211" a badge number.  I'll bet a phone call to any fire house in NY would get the answer.  That ring is worn smooth on the edges. Someone wore it for a long time.
