Oh, I see exactly what you meant now. That's definitely it! Well that's one big problem down. Thanks a bunch! My apologies for being so incoherent.

bingster- I hope that's it. I'm not sure I could get the receiver element off without seriously damaging the plastic around it. I don't suppose there are any identifying I'm-a-fake marks to look for that would make it easy to check?

Edited because I seriously have my wires crossed re: the words transmit and receive

Whoa, Ben pulled out the calipers! 

One of the things that I notice is sure handy when it comes to helping out with problems like this, is having lots of phones and phone parts to compare.  Clearly I need to buy a lot more phones.
