Thanks, Stub.

I disconnected the yellow and black wires from the ground, as suggested.

I've been tracing all the wiring and I think I may have found a problem.  in the photo of my transmission cup which wires would correspond to the red, the brown, and the orange in the wiring diagram?  I suspect the red wire in the photo is in the wrong place.  Should the red and yellow wires be switched?  (I hope that makes sense! I must say you fellows are showing infinite patience.)

I think I just answered my own question...just noticed the OR and R marks by the terminals in the transmitter cup.  So the yellow wire is where the diagram's red wire is located.  Getting late here, so I'll tackle it tomorrow.

DNO,
Here's a pic of your handset wiring-  You will have to forgive me being so slow but I'm on dial-up and it takes 2 forevers to get anything done. Hope this helps.  stub

Thank you for your help, Stub.

I think I corrected the wiring but I'll check it all again...soon as I can convince that transmitter cap to come off again!
