Title: A New Aladdin
Post by: 19and41 on October 07, 2017, 07:19:56 PM
While waiting for the next hurricane to brush the area, I thought I would look for another Aladdin lamp to have for outages and maybe more.  I wanted to get a glass font to better keep track of the fuel level.  It appears that Ebay is having coupon offers in the collectibles categories this weekend.  I found a nice Washington drape amber lamp with a new 23 burner at 20% off.  It looks like most lamps are ala carte deals And this one will need the wick, mantle, spider and shade, but at least the lamp proper didn't cash me in.

The lack of seeing the fuel level is part of the fun, especially when refilling and as to whether or not you'll end up over-flowing... ;D

Seriously though, don't really see many glass fonts over here for Aladdin lamps, just the metal ones, or if you're lucky, a bakelite one which I think was made for WWII to save copper usage for the war efforts... :)

well, with the metal one,  The font emptied sooner than expected.  then the mantle faded to 2/3 of its brightness, then began fo form clumps of carbon on it.  I don't want that happening if I can help it.  If I run both at the same time that ought to give a better indication of a low font for both.

If you're getting the black soot deposits, then the wick is up too high, just back it off a bit, let the carbon burn off, then try carefully bringing it back up keeping a lookout for any dark spots (usually caused by an uneven wick)... :)

You fancy guys and your mantles.... just get a top of the line beat up Dietz Little Wizzard ;D

Cant wait to see the new addition! With two going your house will be pretty well illuminated (and heated). I wish they made more reflectors and the like for older Dietz lanterns.  My No 2 Blizzard is quite bright, but the light is all to the sides.

I just got notice the lamp is in the mail.  Now to try to find the other things it needs.  A wick, mantle, Lox on chimney, shade support, and a shade.  It's looking like Amazon is winning in the cheapstakes in this search.  They are selling at the same cost as an as new item on Ebay, but the Ebay items hang on 5 to 10 dollar shipping charges. Amazon has the same prices to start with free shipping.  It was also cute to see the same firm selling the same things on both boards with the different prices.

Sounds like you're having to source a bit more than I did to get my Super Aladdin up and running, all part of the fun though, I just need to get a few more mantles in stock just incase I break the two I presently have on my Super and the 23... :)

At least there are plenty of laughs to be had on this road to the poor house.  This one really took the cake.

This is a good pricing benchmark site:

     https://www.lanternnet.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?

Not the cheapest but new items and I've never been disappointed with any order I've placed with them. I combine a lot of things in each order to keep the shipping down.

There are other sellers or new items, just don't follow Aladdin parts, just know if this site.

twocv probably knows every one of Aladdin lamp parts suppliers.

Ain't the first time I've seen a listing like that, the bases are useful in using a lamp as a miniature blueflame heater, but pretty much worthless without the mantle... ;D

Nah, I've just used ebay for my Aladdin bits and pieces so far, mostly listings of people having clear-outs, emptying old hardware shops, or people not knowing what they've got and just trying to make room... :)

I have been to 4 online parts dealers, including the one TelePlay put up and have come to a conclusion about each.  The MSRP's on each part seem to be bulletproof.  The only cost differential on any of them is if the shipping costs are reduced.  There seems to be 1 distributor in Tennessee that must supply at least some of the others.  They are the ones selling on amazon absent shipping costs.  My parts necessary to get the unit up is $116 through them.  I am balking.   :o

That's why I looked for used or NOS parts on ebay (aswell as took a trip to ikea for the Super's shade & made it fit!), brand new original parts are insanely pricey, I know they're a niche market, but it's still a small enough market that could put off buyers to the point they end up with no demand due to pricing...

My new lamp came yesterday.  The seller really packed it well.  That thing looks better than I had expected it to.  It will need a bit of sunshine to make it to look as good in a picture.

Photos on things for sale always tend to look awful unless the sellers actually took some time and care to make a good impression, take my Super, the pictures from its' auction are terrible and made the lamp look rather grotty, but on arrival it wasn't so bad, just depends on the seller... :)

That's just how they look at first.  They look richly experienced after your treatment!

I like that brown glass, very nice. Will you put a glass shade on it or just leave the glass chimney alone?

I want to put a glass shade on it as I can find one.

Looks like a nice font, would probably go with a red glass shade (usually white inside so puts out white light underneath), unless you're after a white shade for nice distributed light for the whole room which would also work nicely... :)

True in most cases (after removing the rust I was able to read this was made in Syracuse in April of 1936). Molasses is a great tool for these.

However, while this is my last lantern and I mean it, I'm starting to think a brown glass Aladdin on the dining room table would look nice, with a red or green shade. I see them in antique malls but know little about them so price has no basis for me, now.

What twocv said about a red shade sounds great. Post pictures along the way.

I've been looking at the number of colors they have made.  They would make an exquisite piece of decor while standing by for action.

Whilst poking about on ebay UK after winning my Aladdinette heater, I spotted these shade support tripods in the US for sale:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/222672718638

That's basically what my 23 has, they (the seller) also has some under-burner versions in 10" and 14" it seems... :)

Saw a likely looking shade and put a low bid sealed with a snipe.  It went for the bid. $25 and $15 for shipping.

The spider arrived at the same time as the shade yesterday. Disassembled the burner when removing it to try the spider and found there is no wick support/elevator.  Something else to order.  Found good deals on the wick and mantle and they're on their way.  Til I find a good deal on a lox-on chimney I'll have to use the other lamps'.

That makes lamp/lantern collection fun, building something up from era specific parts and then enjoying years of service from it. Looking forward to seeing it all together, the brown and white glass is a neat combination.

I had it easy with my 23 when I first got it, it was a complete lamp that seemingly hadn't been used (though the mantle it came with had been flashed off, but was never actually heated up though was broken beyond redemption anyway!), the only thing I sourced for it was a Loxon chimney as the heelless one has an uneven base so always sat at an angle which looked wrong... :)

Of course the Super Aladdin was another story, but, suffice to say, it turned out nicely, even if it ends up impacting on my head 'cos I'm not looking where I'm going while it's hung up!!  ;D

I think this will come out nicely.  The shade's top opening gives about an inch clearance from the chimney and the glass is about 1/8 inch thick.  The pic makes the skirt look narrower than it actually is.  One thrift store I frequent has had a glass shade with a fluted top, but was a busy dark pattern painted on it and a 7 inch base.  The wrong item at the right price, $4.

Yeah, you'll have it up and running in no time, as for that other shade, well, you could buy it, then find a lamp that it would fit.................. ;D

Yes! for that long awaited third Aladdin lamp project! Isn't that an unspoken rule? It is not a collection until you have three of something? .... or six, ....or twenty?

Unfortunately mean old Mr. Wallet has the say as to when the next project is in the works.  This afternoon My cars' idle air control valve has started acting up and it jumped the line in the order of attention.  I'll have to try to change it out after my dentist visit (1 filling and 4 applications).  That will be a busy Tuesday.  At least I have all the parts for the amber lamp ordered and on their way.  The wick came Friday.
