I was the only bidder too, won it for £4.99 (£13 postage though):
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131396519888
The risky part is that the seller said that he cleared the memory on it and then couldn't get it to respond, so, it could just be spare parts, or I could have something with a really simple issue, but, I won't know 'til I get it... :)
Nit sure why I bid on it considering I have a working 616, I guess I just felt a bit sorry for the thing, having used a 308 at the computer shop and knowing how reliable they are it seems a shame to let it go to landfill if it can be repaired (assuming it needs repairing)... :)
Obligatory picture time:
Well, I got the unit today, and as the seller stated, it had problems after being programmed, but as mentioned in another thread, I opened it up and found some of that component-securing goop slopped round the EPROM and I presume an SRAM chip which tracked over to a capacitor and an oscillator, peeled and scraped it off the board & components, making sure to clean out any debris, and hey presto, it's happy as larry, the only issue it has is the lack of a backup battery meaning it's programming defaults back to January 1st 1991 and Pulse-dialling on all lines (had that issue with my 616, it's a UK programming feature it seems)... :)
Cool! I'm glad that it works. You've inspired me to go goop pickin' on my 616.
Good information. My 616 is working as it should so I'm not going to go goo picking (if it ain't broke don't fix it) but if there's a problem later on then that will be done. Thanks.
I am not afraid of death, I just don't want to be there when it happens.
Personally I'd go goo-picking as soon as, depending on where it's crossing it could damage components with stray voltage going where it doesn't belong, especially if it's going over the main EPROM which holds all it's firmware, which you really don't want to lose!! :o
I might open up my 616, see if it has any pickable goo...

Went looking for a replacement battery for mine and found this one online. About $12 each and an exact replacement right down to the connector. If you are thinking of getting a battery for your unit, all the info for the battery is on the package so using that in Google you may be able to find one for sale on the other side of the pond.
Only problem is, getting those in this country, since getting my 616 I've looked a number of times and there's none to be had here, and the cost of importing is a bit steep for something so small, I may make up my own batteries using off-the-shelf tagged cells, not too hard to achieve really, plenty of tagged 2.4v NiCad button cells out there that can add up to about the same mAh capacity... :)
Or maybe possibly buy a couple of these (why do they never show up when I search for them?? These cropped up in a related items thing!!!)... ::)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290913279783
Description's a bit wonky donkey, but, the picture says it all, assuming the pictured item is the one they offer...
I think this is the same battery that I first bought locally from Batteries Plus only to find the connector did not match and the battery was too large for the 616 battery well (note the 110mAh 2-cell vs the 300-400 mAh 3 cell battery).
Unfortunately, the KX-T308 is now a Panasonic cordless phone (http://www.batteriesplus.com/products/549-0/4878-Cordless-Phone-Batteries/114393-Panasonic/KX--T308/1.aspx), which I think is the use for this battery, at least that's what the Batteries Plus add shows.
Amazon also sells the green 3-cell battery (http://www.amazon.com/300mAh-Battery-Panasonic-KX-T1232-KX-T308/dp/B00G5TUHB2) in the US for $12 plus $5 shipping. (the top black battery is a Rayovac from Batteries Plus, the bottom green battery is from Amazon, same picture as the one from the UK web site)
Here is another source (http://www.voicesonic.com/customer/Panasonic_system-21888-Panasonic_KXA16_System_Backup_Unit_KXA16.html) for the replacement battery.
This picture is smaller but it shows the connector better. Don't know if they ship internationally. They want $12 US plus shipping, same as Interstate Battery.
They also have other items available, including a like-new 30310 for under $200 (http://www.voicesonic.com/customer/Panasonic_phone_system-1719-Panasonic_KX_T308_System_and_Phones.html).
Digi-Key Link (http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en?WT.z_supplier_id=455&WT.z_page_type=SP&WT.z_page_sub_type=SS&WT.z_oss_type=Keyword&v=455&v=1226&lang=en&site=us&KeyWords=smp-02&x=13&y=6) to JST connector page, SMP-02 plug and SMR-02 receptical and connector parts page (http://www.jst-mfg.com/product/pdf/eng/eSM.pdf).
Sounding more and more likely that I'll build a battery (or two, need one for the 616 as it needs a replacement as it's OEM Panasonic P-01H-F2G1 battery's a bit on the tired side)... ???
Comparing the connector size of the one I found on ebay versus my OEM panasonic battery from the 616, the pictured battery is of the same scale as my actual battery, but obviously if they're not the same battery, then it could be a bit of a problem... :-\

Do you happen to have the UPC (universal product code) number from the other side of the packaging?

Picture is worth a few words. Close up of the connector and a mm scale on the battery also attached.
Thanks for posting the back side. I scanned the bar code with the scanner app on my iphone and there's nothing in the url database for that number. When I enter it manually to the online url database it also says no record. An old package?

An old package?
Don't know. Here is the link to my source, where I got mine. It's a special order, a 30 day delivery from order date. They are now $12.99 plus shipping.
It may be old packaging if they send a "one of" order to the factory in China, have them build one, put it in an old package and ship it by slow boat from China for redelivery in the US. That 30 day time frame would fit that scenario.

Funny thing is, the way google's search algorithms work, searching for "TEL0170" keeps coming up with various UK telephone numbers... ;D
Even funnier, or stranger, is that if I do a google search for "battery TEL0170" I get hits to the Interstate web sit but the battery shown is not the one in pictures above. If I go to the main Interstate Battery page and use their search fro TEL0171, a different 270 mAh battery comes up that won't work. Only by clicking on the link I provided in Reply #14 above does the 308/616 replacement battery come up.
And, yes, I got a lot of phone numbers with or without "battery" in the search terms.
I seem to remember that I bought a replacement battery for less than USD$10 somewhere.
PS: here is the original Panasonic battery part: P-01H-F2G1 and picture
Searching for that got me plenty of replacements, IIRC.
Here is another which will work perfectly well. It is a bit higher in Ma/hr, but it is far cheaper at 2 for $4.00

Dave, Have you used this battery in a 308/616? Before ordering I'd like to make sure the connector would fit and that the battery size would fit. The seller says these have been in storage for over 5 years. What's the self life of NiCads? Thanks.

I think this has a different connector. All the batteries that I have had for cordless phones and the like, have a distinctly different connector than the PBX.
Surely any ~2.5 Volt battery will work, but for something so cheap, I usually don't feel like spending effort to replace the connector on the other end as well.

Given that these PBX units are at least 25 years old, and I still have the original Panasonic battery in at least two of mine—well, that's an assumption, I can't be sure about that, there is no date on them—I wouldn't be terribly concerned about shelf life when it's been only 5 years.

I have if not the same, a very similar one in my 616. It sticks out of the battery hole a bit, but lots of room for the lid to close.... As per the age of them, he does say they have been kept in proper storage - its a pretty cheap gamble. It does look to be the same connector - many Panasonics use this connector (if not, just cut the wires on this close to the connector and the old one close to the battery and splice the remaining leads to the old connector..
Dave
I've often found stored NiCads to be one heck of a gamble, some I've had that worked fine initially, then just completely die on me, others they work but have reduced capacity, and the rest were only fit for the bin...
It's why I'm considering buying new cells and soldering my own together, that way I know it'll be brand new... :)

I know I have been disappointed with some cheap nickel-cadmium batteries myself, but also have to say that in some cases I wanted them as replacements for alkaline AA batteries. This is generally not a good idea, because NiCads only deliver 1.2V per cell, rather than the 1.5V of a fresh Alkaline cell. So it depends on the application requirements. However, if 1.2 Volts are enough (or 2.4 for a dual-cell battery) they provide a steady voltage to almost the point of exhaustion, while alkaline batteries suffer constant decay of potential.
Some sources recommend discharging nickel-cadmium batteries completely for storage, even shorting their terminals after careful discharge. I am not clear about the reason, but perhaps it has to do with the so-called memory effect of NiCads.

This one looks like an In Stock US based exact replacement.
In Stock 2.4 V 110 mAh battery (http://www.batterybob.com/product.asp?intProdID=174141) for $13.82 with free shipping.
The one Dave posted is too large for the 616 battery well and the connector is a wireless phone style. Any 2.4 V NiCad would work if you are willing to solder it in and place it below the battery well. I was providing a source to one that is an exact replacement. I bought one of those larger batteries at a local store for about $12 and took it back when I realized it was too large. I think any battery over 110 mAh will be too large for the well into which it is supposed to fit and you may have to clip both connectors off and hard wire it in, if you want to be a purist about the battery.
Prices seem to have gone up a dollar since I bought mine. What you get all depends on what you want, or want to do.
Here's another what seems to be a US In Stock source.
$10.99 plus $4.99 shipping.
PANASONIC KXA16 Battery (http://www.budgetbatteries.com/panasonic-kxa16-battery-cordless-phone-panasonic-bb-024632.html)

Seems the original battery was a KXA16; I've seen that number on other sites as well.

The original battery was a P-01H-F2G1 (http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=13471.msg141401#msg141401) It even says so on the laminate battery compartment closures.

Yes, that is correct.
It seems this battery must have been used more recently in a cordless phone and that battery was given the name/number/keyword of KXA16. Imagine they went to a larger battery after finding out the life of a 110 mAh battery in a cordless phone was not very good.

It's definitely a
must-have piece for the precision collector.
2CV, re-pop 'em ,sell 'em on epay. ;)
Now I'll have to look, and see if my 616 has one, lol! I might be a potential customer. :D
Best regards!
>>EDIT: Yepper, mine's got the tag, somewhere between 'minty', and NOS' 8) <<
Neither my 616 or 308 have the battery cover either. Didn't even know they came with one :) Of course neither unit was bought new.
Just a comment on the batteries. I would never put a used battery in anything, except in an emergency. A nicad cell which has been used may already have dendrites (which cause its tendancy to have a memory inside caused by improper charging/useage: think of a dendrite as a root which grows from one layer to the other, which can short out the cell)
However, I have used a number of NOS Nicads which were outdated and in the original packaging that have been kept in good storage and I have found they last just as long as fresh stock.
Just my personal experience...
Dave
When I first got my 616 I always thought there was something missing... ;D
For those of you who don't feel complete with out it.
