So, I've got a Zenith Console Stereo, Phonograph, and 8-track player.  I got it last weekend and was told everything worked, the radio works, but the phono and tape player don't.

I got the start switch working now, but the turntable still doesn't turn.

And the tape player's select switch almost immediately broke and it registers the tape is playing, but no sound comes out.  Ironically, that's what happened with my old 8-track deck as well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Tom:

Unfortunately, the problems you have described would be pretty much a "hands-on" kind of diagnosis for me.  It could be simple, but on the other hand could be complex.

Good luck with it.

Is it belt driven, and is the drive belt broken? Decades ago I had a nice cassette tape deck that quit working. It turned out it had a broken drive belt. I found a heavy duty rubber band and made a "temporay" fix. The fix worked so well I never found the "proper" Replacement

I'm not sure about the tape deck, I haven't taken it out yet, but my other 8-track player doesn't work either, and that one has a very good belt on it.
