What type of cord restraint is used inside a 706A receiver.  The receiver cord was missing from my candlestick phone, so I have nothing to go by.

Tie either a single knot or a figure 8 knot in the body of the cord.

The single knot was the original method, shown in a 1938 Bell System Practice (Section C35.260, Issue 4, 2-1-38.
This was changed to a figure 8 knot in 1951 (ADDENDUM C35.260, Issue 1, 3-15-51).

3.03 The method of cording is as follows:

               (1) Remove receiver cap and receiver unit.

               (2) Loosen the screws that hold the contact springs in
the receiver case just enough to permit turning them
so they are clear of the well where the knot is to be
                stored in the case.

                (3) Press the receiver end of the cord through the receiver
case from the small end of the case.

                (4) Tie a figure 8 knot in the body of the cord as shown in
                     Fig. 5.

                (5) Pull the knot back into well in the receiver case taking
care not to damage the contact springs.

                (6) Turn contact springs back in place and terminate cord
tips under screw heads as shown in Fig. 5. See that
cord conductors are under and not over contact springs.

                (7) Insert receiver unit and screw receiver cap on to the
                     receiver case hand tight.
