The first time I went to England was summer 1971 and they had just converted to the decimal system currency a few months earlier. Consequently there were lots of old shilling, two shilling (etc) coins still circulating but they then had the new value of 5P rather than 12P per shilling.

I often hear people saying that decimalisation was a swizz, as it de-valued the UK's currency so much, making things more expensive to buy with apparently identical coinage...

Then again, they're still at it today, sneakily converting the 5 and 10 pence coins to steel from Cupronickel, to make the coinage even more worthless metallurgically speaking, and forcing people to change their coin machines to accept said new coins at their own cost, gotta love it when they come up with money making schemes like that...

Oh they keep changing the metal here in Canada as well. We have $1 and $2 coins and they just changed the metal of the $1 coins causing coin operated machines to spit them out etc etc....

I hear they're also planning to drop the 1 cent coin over there too, due to it being expensive to produce and not really worth that much (bit like how they dropped the Decimal 1/2 penny here, I have loads of those, only worth their weight in copper now!)...

Which is what I've done...

It would be interesting to see the difference between the 10p coin mechanism and the 20p coin mechanism, they have to be different cos I see no way of converting the 10p one to 20p coins...
