WE 1011G / Oil Inside?

Hi All,

I picked up a WE 1011G lineman's butt phone yesterday at a flea market ($8.00 after negotiations).  Started taking it apart to clean it and found that inside the rubber body, there is a lot of what looks like motor oil sort of slathered all over everything.  Question is: is this supposed to be there for some reason?  I didn't clean it out, just in case.  Has anyone else found this in taking these apart?

I am disappointed that you have not gotten any great advice yet.  I would offer you some...but I don't have any to give!

I have one of these I have not gotten into yet, and was hoping to gain some insight as the result of your question!

Maybe someone will jump in and enlighten us!
