Having Trouble with my model 500 - New to this

I just bought a Northern Electric Model 500 (Made in Canada) I think from 1973 - at least that's what the dates on the speaker, microphone, and ringer unit say.

It has a Rotary Dial, G3 Handset, and a 425B network.

Long story short, it takes the line off the hook, and will dial.  When I talk into it, I can hear myself on another extension.

Problem is, I get nothing from the earpiece.

The speaker inside looks good visually (no tears, water damage,  etc) and I get continuity on the white wires, which go to the R and GN terminals on the network.  There's a capacitor between the terminals which looks like new, and I know they don't fail often.

It has a modular plug on it.  I subbed in another cable just to check, same problem.

It was configured for use in a business, because it has an extension number on the dial.

Any help anyone can offer is appreciated.

As rare as it is, you could have a connection that is corroded.

With these old phones having a mostly mechanical make-up, the constant contacts build up corrosion.

Take the cover off and move the hook switch while listening in.

if you hear pops and crackles you might be OK.

Or you could simply have a bad speaker. As rare as that is.... :)
