sanding plastic bodies

does anyone uses sandpaper in sanding plastic bodies? what grit of sand paper do you use?
will it either improve the shininess of the plastic body or will it loose its shininess?

I don't know anything about sanding phones, I think Dennis had a post someplace recently about this.  I do have to say however that the title of this topic would make a great name for an early 90's Seattle grunge band.
