John has hit the nail on the head, once again.

Utilizing caution, and personal protective equipment when dealing with petroleum products / byproducts will help minimize / eliminate the effect of carcinogens upon one's person.

A general rule of thumb that I use; your mileage may vary, but the facts shan't:

All plastics are petroleum-based.
Not true. Far from true actually.

A vast array of consumer products, for example, is made from cellulose acetate, a plastic which comes from wood chips.
This includes most plastic telephone housings before 1960 (TENITE).
Polyethylene, perhaps the most common plastic of all, was first made not from petroleum, and can be made just as well from renewable sources, and from natural gas.  It is completely inert.

Quote
All petroleum products are inherently carcinogenic.
inherently?  Why?  Not true.

Quote
Minimizing the presence of, and exposure to either in your life is generally advisable.
Your mileage may vary, but not very far. ;)

Let's be safe out there!

Best regards!

Welcome to the forum. You may just want to send to dial to Steve Hilsz.

If you start at the top of the topic in which this post resides, you can find out a lot about his dial repair/cleaning services.

And, his price is reasonable.

I'm sending the dial to Steve. Thanks to all for your replies !   Dave

Got a report from Steve on my dial and  it was a broken clutch spring in the Gov.  I should be up and dialing soon :)

      Thanks , Dave
