I was looking on ebay and found a 1954 WE 500 with straight handset cords for $20 BIN. I did not buy because for me shipping was $80. But maybe someone lives closer and can buy it.

I think that you can do much better on 1954 black 500.  This one looks to be in poor condition for the price.  The shipping cost shown to MI is much too high also.

For some reason now it is showing $15 for shipping

The phone is a 1957 and in very bad condition. The handset cord is no good, dial is very cracked. I would pass.
Like Larry says, you can do better.

Except, it has a "G1" Bakelite handset.     Worth the price of admission all by itself.

No joke.   It's got a W.E. "G1" Bakelite handset.    Double click to enlarge.

That handset is nice, including the caps (no pitting), but I still would look for a better overall phone.  They are out there.... :)
