I'm pretty sure it's a refurbish marking, just wondered what the "WAR" marking was and why it was used, what the acronym stood for.
The idea that a four-year degree is the only path to worthwhile knowledge is insane.

I think it means that the WARanty on the rubber feet ran out 9-64.

This used to be common around here on refurbished phones leased from Southern Bell. I believe these were marked WAR at the Atlanta Western Electric Service Center. Another location would have a different letter in the middle.

The correct model number here is R500DR-3. The first R means remanufactured and the D means dial and the second R means retractile cord and the -3 means black.
