Gray 23J Paystation on eBay
« on: December 06, 2015, 02:42:56 PM »
Came across this Gray Paystation. Looks pretty good and not a crazy price. I know less than nothing about these. Can one of our experts tell me if this is correct? I think the handset and cord are not original but I do not know about anything else.
Thanks!

You're right about the cord.  Most payphones I've seen have the straight armored handset cord.

Pay Stations from the '40s typically had straight vinyl cords; armored cords didn't come out until the '50s or '60s.

If it is from the '40s, then the F-1W handset could be correct.

I remember an old friend of mine telling me that they had a straight line handset cord payphone at MIT when he was there. He said they used to take a thumb tack and stick it in the cord, shorting the wires and allowing a free call to be placed!

I guess they should have known about those MIT boys!
