I agree that development probably began at BTMC prior to WW2 and all these phones are a product of that development. I don't know the actual sequence though.

The article that appeared in Electrical Communications was written by E S Mc Larn in New York, NY. The telephone depicted is neither the BTMC 2749 nor the FTR 803 although both are clearly derived from it.

After a closer look, it appears to me that your telephone bodies are the phone depicted in Electrical Communications. Both the BTMC 2749 and the FTR 803 are derived from it. I suspect that the PTT version was further developed in cooperation with the PTT and others to "more closely match their requirements". There was an FTR model prior to the 803 that was closer to the phone in Electrical Communications and your telephone bodies. I don't have any catalogue information for it but I have attached some pictures (I think one has an incorrect handset).
