What's the secret to making  these functional? Two have the blue sliding plug and of doesn't have anything visible. I'd really like to enjoy these.
I'm guessing I'm need a couple of wall plates... if I can still get them still.

For the ones with the sliding plug, you need a wall-mount phone socket, I forget the terminology over there for it, for the ones without, the wiring goes directly into the phone onto the line terminals on the network... :)

You are correct, you need a wall plate and yes, you can still get them. Here is one seller on eBay:

Sounds like you already have this part ( "with blue plug"). Shown is the 228 adaptor to convert a pre-1974 hardwired phone to modular.

So, you need an RJ11W jack, typically a 630A4. Or, you can just use a standard line cord to go from the baseboard jack to L1 and L2 terminals inside the phone.

OK, I guess I misunderstood. You need the other piece. One like this:

This looks like a pretty cheap flimsy one. I have a box of Suttle plates. Good American made stuff. Do you have the box on the wall to mount it to? If you just want to display them and not have them work you can just screw the back right to the wall.

I bought a couple Leviton-branded wall sockets back in 2013 that a UK seller had available at the time, one for my Cortelco 2554, and one for a 554 that never transpired (lack of funds for the USPS extortion, I mean postage cost), all plastic, but to date the one I use for the cortelco hasn't broken... :)

Thank you! I just took the plate off and while it's wired to the phone, is just as you said. That's the one thing about this hobby is learning.  Very enjoyable.

I but metal ones at Home Depot in Mexico. They are packaged in English as if they come from the states, so check Home Depot for metal ones.

You can remove the modular backplate plate and hardwire the phone.
The modular backing plate shown can also be drilled to make it fit WE354, AE90's ect.
Some of the other mod backplates can be modified for other telephones as well.

You can find the backplates for WE 1554/2554,
there were a couple of different backplates for trimline telephones as well.
I modified a round top trimline backplate to fit an AE (roundtop) spacesaver. ISTR drilling a couple of holes and cutting off the bottom of the mod plate.

I used to buy 554's for $1-3 to get the modular backplates.

No need to drill a 228-type plate from a 554 if you want to use it on a 354. The key holes for screws on a 354 and a 554 are the same.

I'll have to keep you in mind. That will be my next project. I'm currently wanting to get my Galion up and working and trying to source parts for that, but I'll be getting back to you for sure and seeing how much.

Thanks a bunch!
