Title: Accessing the line mode browser with 1960s tech
Post by: DavePEI on April 03, 2014, 05:16:53 AM
From Suhayl Khan - an interesting demonstration which came about as a result of a series of emails he and I had several years ago which got him going on teletypes. In the video, he is accessing a teletype via a dial phone using an acoustically coupled Livermore modem into a UNIX system, running a line mode browser.

The ASR-33 teletype is accessing web pages using a line mode browser...

Nice to see his project come to fruition, and to know that I had a small part in it!

From his text:
QuoteHow long did it take you to get the equipment working for the video? I received my first ASR-33 Teletype around May 2011. Dave Hunter of the Telephone Museum of Prince Edward Island and Teletype mechanic Wayne Durkee helped me via email with making adjustments and provided important advice.

For those who are having trouble figuring out the escape sequences from the "browser shortcut" displayed shortly after the 10 minute mark in the video, here is the current URL of the archived first-ever page on the World Wide Web:
