I opened up my first two 302s today just for a look-see.

One has component dates varying from '43 to '53, with steel bells.  Your typical Frankenphone.

The other has all dates from'48, though I haven't checked every single date yet.

The 1948 has no bells and the bell ringer assembly is loose but rivited to the base.  I can't tell how to remove the ringer assembly.  It there a trick to that?

Also does anyone know if original 302s from different years (Pre War, War, and Post War) had brass or steel bells, or was it all just mix and match?

I found replacement bells in brass but I'd like to stay as authentic as possible for each of the three eras.

Thanks for any help,  -Matt

I've seen them both ways. Remember, this was an every day instrument taken for granted. Ma Bell would mix match parts all the time. I do believe steel bells were used during the war, but that's relying on a weak memory.

Removal of the ringer assembly is fairly straight forward. Check this quick vid I made.

Thanks for the vid, BDM.  Kind of you.  Enjoyed your radio vids also.  -Matt
