Does anyone know how to do old phone record searches to find an old phone number ?

The Wayback Machine has a few old phone books.

The main library where I live has a historical room where they have phone directories dating back almost 100 years.  They also have reverse directories that are configured by exchange and line number, which would make it easy to find out who had a particular phone number and when.

Are the records on micro fische (?) or actual books ?

They are actual directories.  I don't think they have them on microfiche.  They also have restrictions on photocopying anything fragile so you have to bring a pencil and paper with you to write anything down.  Pens are not allowed.  I'm going to look up some information on the house I'm currently living in so will check on how far back the books go when I'm there.

Are those books just local to your area ?

As far as I know, they are local books.  I'm hoping to get over there this week to do some  research and will inquire then about other parts of California.

RP;
What I'm looking for are phone records of 1950-51 for Oneida, New York.

You might want to call a big public library in Oneida and see if they have phone books.  If they do, they might even look up an old number for you.

Never thought of that.

Yeah, my library would be limited to California.

Kittybell;
I though we had it, but not listed, we left in 1956, maybe just before the new directory came out. I emailed Tom Stowell to see if he had any information back one or two years earlier.
Thanks for the link.
