Does anyone know if there was a standard height that wooden phones were installed at?  For example, was it standard Bell practice to install the phone so that the transmitter was say 5 feet and 5 inches off the ground?  Or possibly was it just up to each installer to do whatever the homeowner/business owner wanted to do?

There was a standard height. I don't know what it is or when it became the standard. But Bell did have standard mounting height for their wall mounted telephones.

This topic should answer your question. Five feet or thereabouts.

I remember when I installed the phone wiring in my house, as it was being built in 1985. I took a big chance that the cabinet door in the kitchen wouldn't hit my 554 and I got very lucky with that. I just eyeballed where to put the wall jack when the walls were studs and there were no cabinets built yet. It was above the wall switch to the fluorescent light above the sink, so I only had a little wiggle room.

I seem to recall 56 1/2 inches from center of transmitter to floor.

Thanks guys.  I figured there was one since Ma Bell was OCD about literally everything!
