Hello...New to the forum and I'm just back from purchasing a bunch of phones from a craigslist ad. Here's a pic of one I'm having a difficult time IDing. It is made by Western Electric,. Does not have a dial and has a date of 1948 inside of the headset.

Your help would be greatly appreciated,

Ken

Welcome to the Forum...its a Western Electric Manual 302, no dial, used for extensions and operator assisted call outs....Doug

You can always add a dial later. A correct one would be a "5H", I believe.

Welcome Mainephones.  Is the case of yours plastic or metal?  The metal are really heavy, kind of a heavy metal phone.

Where can I purchase one of these dialers? And also where can I purchase disassembling and assembling instructions on this type of phone or for that matter all the 25 phones I just purchased...all being rotary style.

Thanks for your reply !

Thank you.I read through this last night and look forward to restoring these older phones!

What would you suggest I do to restoring the color on the phone and headset? Polish? or paint? and if paint do you have a link for that or any info.

Many thanks for you help,
Ken

There's an excellent thread over here that pertains to polishing bakelite handsets (and phone cases):

You can try some of the same polishing techniques to polish the plastic case.

For dials, ebay is probably your best bet.  There are other websites that sell them outright, but their prices are generally quite high.  A 5H on ebay can be had for $20-$40.  Just do an occasional search for "DIAL" in this category:

...is chock full of the information you'll need to open most phones and check their wiring.  However, if you have a problem that's not addressed there, or just want some direct help, let us know and we'll jump in to help!
