This is an intercom phone (interphone), as evidenced by no induction coil and no capacitor, and the DC ringer.

One could make modifications to add the inductor, the capacitor and use an external ringer, but I would not advocate doing that to an otherwise nice looking interphone.  Interphones have a niche in the collectors world.

Yes, just like today.  So there were many applications.  Common applications were in large houses, businesses, hotels, apartments, factories, stores......the list goes on.
