While taking pictures of the 4 metal 302's I just got I noticed something I had not seen before. The 1937 cases have a hole inside below the dial in front. One of them has a wood plug inserted in that hole, the other does not. The 38 & 39 do not have the hole. Attached pictures have the location marked in yellow. What as the purpose of this??

The feature is present in the housing from 1936 to late 1937.  I have seen its purpose referred to as steadying the ringer, but don't recall where.
