Title: Auction 102: Rare ABLM Ericsson 1895 Potbelly Candlestick
Post by: TelePlay on September 15, 2013, 09:32:52 PM
eBay can go for weeks without anything special and then, wham, two interesting phones listed within an hour of each other. This phone starts high at $249.00 but should go up once someone jumps into the bidding waters. It is another 7 day auction so should end just after contest 101 closes. Looking at the contest rules, I found nothing about running two auctions simultaneously.  ;)

The seller listed it as an "Antique 1895 Candle Stick Potbelly Phone Telephone Ericsson Vintage Bakelite OLD" with the item condition as "Used" and states "Offered is this 1895 Potbelly Chrome & Bakelite Candle Stick Phone with stamping/lettering around the chrome mouth piece area of  "PATENTED OCT. 29, 1895 MADE IN SWEDEN BY A B L M ERICSSON & CO. STOCKHOLM". This phone stands approx. 11 inches tall & the old man that we bought this phone from told us that he repaired a small crack in the chrome section where the silver is a slightly different color. I wish he would have left this phone alone & let the professionals repair the crack, but THE NEW OWNER CAN UNDO WHAT HE DID. This rare phone has ALL ITS ORIGINAL PARTS  with a black bakelite mouthpiece (tiny chip in it)  & original cord & receiver ~ which are in fantastic condition.".

When processing the photos, I spotted a few issues so please go to the eBay listing and look at the posted pictures rather than rely on this limited but representative set of photos.

You can find a similar candlestick and over 190 other rare candlesticks from that time period at the ->Old Telephones<- (http://oldtelephones.com/telephones/top-50-rarest-candlesticks/)website. They don't list values so you are on your own when taking a guess at what the 102nd phone in our Auction Contest section will end up selling for when the bidding ends on September 22nd.

Still another chance to either move up a rung or to get onto the -> Contest Standings <- (http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=4198.0) list, you have to play to win!

New members on the forum are always very welcome and encouraged to take a guess. After all, there are no wrong guesses, just one lucky one.

Go high ($3,370) or go low ($2,125), that is the question, and the problem with taking one of the last guesses in the contest after the winning guess is already on the board . . .  ???

Where's that coin?

It came up tails (low) so it's $2,125 for me . . .

Congratulations to Dan who won another contest further extending his lead as our Grand Champion with his 10th win edging out Mr. Bones by $9.69! His guess of $2,359.69 was only $65.31 away from the winning bid of $2,425.00. How does he do it? He's won 10% of our contests and 3 of the last 9!

In a more interesting ending than the #101 Donut Phone contest, this phone jumped from $1,455 to $1,999 about a half hour before the end where it stayed until the snipes began about 4 seconds to go with m***x (1827), again, jumping in at the last second with a bid of $2,425 to win the phone.

Check out the updated Contest Standings (http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=4198.msg51445#msg51445) to see who's who through 102 contests.

Thanks to all who played in this contest. As always, there is only one way to get on the winner's board or move up a rung - you have to play to win.

Another chance to get on or move up would be with ->Auction Contest #103 <- (http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=10191.0) which runs through 9-28-13.

Wow!, What did you know (how did you do that), but you never got back to my PM with a new guess so I thought you walked away from this one, and when the contest ended, you weren't on the list so I never went through the posts.

This rare event has earned you a place on the CRPF "Bull's-Eye List" found at the bottom of the Contest Standings (http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=4198.msg51445#msg51445) page as recognition for your late, but very accurate, guess rejected under Rule #3.

Congratulations on receiving the first ever Honorable Mention in the CRPF Auction Contest, a rare honor indeed.

Thanks.

I never noticed your PM as I come here only sporadically.

Hey, like you said, it's only a game! I'm having fun anyway.

By the way, I was NOT the guy that won that auction. ;D

Not bad for an anonymous potbelly with an Ericsson transmitter on it.
