I'll start..

I like the idea of having a topic for reference and learning resources.  This gives us a way to point people that have questions about how phones work, all sorts of other phone related reference material such as books.

Colin Chambers has a great web site if you want to learn about phones or experiment and do some projects.

For instance if you go to his site and click on the left margin under Big Books, it takes you to a page that has some downloadable books in pdf form.  One such book is a US Army Technical Manual dated March, 1953 that covers a great deal about how phones work.  It is titled "Fundamentals of Telephony".  It covers the basics of electrical properties and of telephone principles.  Aslo covers switchboards and much more.
