There is a concern, but it depends on the quality of the bakelite.  I have sanded deep scratches out of many phones, clocks, and radios, and have largely been successful.  I don't think that the bakelite on this phone is so rough below the surface.  At any rate, it will be at least a few weeks before I will have any time to do anything.  I will certainly expect to polish the phone with Greygate paste after cleaning and sanding.
