4-button 440, no dial tone

This 4-button phone that looks like a 302 is not a 302.  The keysets that were designed like the 302's were 400 series phones.  Your is probably a 444 wired for 1A1 keysystems.  You will still be able to wire it so that it functions like a 302, however.

I found one online.  It's a 440.  The markings on the bottom got me to thinking and I googled it:  http://mysite.verizon.net/dalderdi/phones/

The 400 series of Western Electric key sets ... were the multiline versions of the 302.

The bakelite handset was polished using Doug's method of "sanding" it with fine steel wool (0000), then soaking it in Avon Skin So Soft Original Bath Oil overnight. This was my first attempt using that method, so I'm not sure how it compares, but at least my chapped hands are better!  I dug through the recycle basket by the mailboxes in my apt. building and found a magazine with an ad that had a lot of black in it and cut out a circle to replicate the original black background behind the A.  The rest of it just needed a touch of Novus, the case was in good shape, shined up real nice.  Fully functions with a nice heavy-duty, old-fashioned ring to it.  Just need to find the part that goes above the keys.

I wish I knew where to find a designation strip holder (that clear plastic part above the keys).  You might try Chuck Irwin in Portland.  I have his number if you need it.  He will also be at the show in Bellevue next month.   Don't know if he will have one, but if anyone does, he would be the likey one.

One funny thing I noticed is this phone will not ring when plugged into a splitter with another phone.  It doesn't like to share for some reason.  There was only one other phone on the splitter, one of my 5302s.

The only way to hold and transfer on the Panasonic is the same way you would use any analog phone, and that is to flash the hookswitch and that places a call on hold, and you can dial the other extension number to transfer.  

I just tried it, it works, cool!
