Harry, that shell marking is standard, I believe.  Most likely a mold number.  The "clock" you refer to is the later date coding system which was used starting sometime in 1960, iirc.  That shell still has the ink stamp on the front edge, as it is from '58 - a bit hard to see in that pic, but it's there.

The date stamp on the edge is what I wanted a picture of but that was as close as he got. I don't recall seeing that mold mark before. It looks like it was hand done.
