Hi , can we see the photos of your phone please ? That's better .Thanks . But... Probably bad connections. On a phone, it's rare for it to be capacitors, I would start by cleaning the connections if the phone hasn't been used for decades or if it has been in a very humid temperature. It happens, I had an extra clean phone but not for the network which was very dirty and had corrosion on some screws (underneath)

The Princess appears little used - as though from a guest bedroom.

Very clean inside.  Ifrom If from our area, is low humidity.  All connections look clean.

Shall try other phone transmitters in the handset to hear if any difference.

Okay , it's possible , try to find if the connections are correctly arranged for a modern telephone line before replacing the transmitter and or the receiver. Often, a badly connected or badly placed wire can also be the cause. This is also to be checked.

(6.5 VDC to Yellow and Black)
While in the handset, I knocked the carbon granule microphone against my knee several times in case the granules were becoming compacted - if that happens.

Earpiece sounds fine.

Found no numbers on the openetwork.  Some blue-ink numbers on part of the white ceramic plate obscured by the keypad metabracket.
Network appears riveted unless the screws are under the cork bottom.

While in the handset, I knocked the carbon granule microphone against my knee several times in case the granules were becoming compacted - if that happens . Earpiece sounds fine.

On your knees, this is unfortunately not enough, take a piece of wood or even on a corner of an old table, hit it several times without damaging it, not on the face (plastic) but on the metal side . For me it worked quite well and there is a noticeable difference. Sometimes it takes more than a dozen taps, not too loud, but enough to hear a difference.

As a teen tried this on my knee and think it worked.  Or imagined that it worked.
Shall try a harder object and multiple taps.
