By that you mean that only one receiver can be off the hook WHILE placing the call?

The second one can then be picked up to listen on the call after the call is placed and both can be use to answer call?

Yes.  Just give it a try.  You cannot hurt anything.

But that is no different than any self contained rotary phone. If another phone is off hook you can't dial a rotary phone. Touch tone WILL work with another phone off hook up until the time the line goes into lockout.

Right I kind of expected that anyway. If I recall correctly we had that problem at home when I was a kid.
