North Electric "Galion" Phone on eBay

Just FYI in case anyone is looking for a Galion phone.  This one appears nice but it has a 54 cycle ringer which means it isn't going to ring.  The seller indicates in his listing that "everything seems to function as it should."  I sent him a "question" telling him it won't ring and the thanked me for the information but the question isn't posted.  I know that most of you know that a 54 cycle ringer wont ring on today's lines but thought I'd give a heads up to those that don't.

Very interesting that this one wound up in Tennessee.  Tidewater Telephone Co. was a Virginia independent that eventually got bought out by GTE, which was in turn bought by Chesapeake & Potomac.  One of my Norths came from Colonial Beach, VA (Tidewater country) and came with an identical card.

Thank you Dennis, I did not know that, and if I had seen that nice clean Galion I may have bid on it.  I really like the styling of the North Galions, and I have two of them and two more in transit.

Now, if a Galion turns out to have the 54 cycle ringer, what is the best and simplest fix?

The simplest fix is to replace it with a 20hz (cycle) ringer, also called a straight line ringer.  The problem is that one often has to buy another phone that has a SL or straight line ringer but then one is still left with a phone without a ringer.  Oldphoneworks sells the replacement ringer for $40 plus shipping.  I recently bought one and it bolted right in and sounded great.  But that's an added expense.

I've seen his work before and it's great, but that phone takes the cake.  I've never seen bakelite look that glassy.  It's really stunning.

Dennis, do you have any insight into what he does to get that result?

Jorge does a very nice job on his phones.  I know he uses Novus2 and once the phone is finished he uses that Turtle Wax product that I mentioned in this post:

Turtle Wax F21.  Otherwise just elbow grease.  He does a fantastic job.  When you get time check out some of his other phones.  He has a sweet AE 80 in red and a beautiful red mushroom phone.
