I just saw this dial on eBay and its number card intrigued me.  Anybody have any idea where this was from?

A bit of time on Google and I might have found it in PA. http://pennsylvania.hometownlocator.com/pa/berks/yellow-house.cfm

The proof would be to find some phone numbers to see if there is a match to the exchange on the dial card.

BINGO - Here's the Yellowhouse Hotel 610-689-xxxx  (MUrdock 9)

It seems a bit strange that the number card would show an named exchange, but the dial face plate has numbers only.  How would a person know how to dial MUrdock?

Good point Larry. I guess the phone might have been installed long before the town went 2L-5N dialling and the numbercard was upgraded where as the entire dial should have been upgraded.

FWIW, MUrdock was also an exchange name in Windsor CT (just north of Hartford) in the 50's and 60's. My wife grew up there, and I remember her phone number for a long time was MUrdock8-xxxx.

Probably a fairly common exchange name in the grand scheme of things.

By the way, are there enough numbers on the dial card? I'm seeing MUrdock9-403. Maybe the last digit is buried in the camera flash?

My assumption was that the last digit has been blurred by the flash.

In British Columbia (used to be all one area code) our "68" Exchange was (and still is) called MUtual rather than Murdock. It is British Columbia's largest single exchange serving all of the downtown Vancouver area. Of course 680 -> 689 is in use as is 660 -> 669 and many many more NXX's.

When I was in CO Installation we had a sign that hung outside of our office in the building. It read "The feeling is MUtual". CO Equipment installers for the most part hated getting sent to MUtual as it was where you went when there wasn't enough "work on the road" (read "work on expenses").

Yes, there is a digit obscured by the flash.  The description of the auction says:

The center dial is marked "Yellow House MUrdock 9-4037".
