I have been putting a 425E network in my 223G and I do not Know what the 542B capacitor is for and where the wires hook up to. Also the little red thing is for and where the wires hook up for it.  Thanks

The red capacitor looks like an Automatic Electric part, and was probably added along with an aftermarket ringer; it's not part of the original phone. The 425B 452B  capacitor was mounted inside the upper housing, behind the coin chute (or raceway or track), and was part of the circuit that included the transmitters mounted on the coin chute to pick up the sound of the gongs to let the operator know how much money you were depositing.

Does anybody know where the wires hook up to for the 542B capacitor on the Western Electric 233G pay phone  .  Thanks

If you mean the 425B 452B capacitor, it connects to A and X.

That's marked 452B. I think we all need glasses. ;D

It may be more serious than that--i.e. transposing numbers even when you aren't trying. I keep writing "9411" instead of "9114" for USPS tracking numbers.

Sorry 452B  I went by memory, that and eyes are not what they use to be. Thanks

Here are the other connections if you are using a 425E network:

Lower Housing:
   Handset:
White to GN on the hook switch
Other white and Black to TR on terminal block at top
Red to T on the terminal block at top

   Line:
Green (Tip) to L on terminal block at top
Red (Ring) to Y on hook switch

Connect a piece of wire between BB and BBX on the hook switch.

Upper Housing:

Dial connects to the terminal block on the side of the upper housing:
(Yellow) from Y on dial to Y
(Black) from BK on dial to BKX*
(Green or Blue) from BB on dial to BB
(White) from W on dial to W
(Red) from R on dial to R*

*Note: if the 452B capacitor, electromagnet and/or signal transmitters are missing, you may reverse the dial wires at BKX and R on the terminal block.

Electromagnet: 2 green wires to A and E (terminal block on coin chute)
Signal Transmitter: 2 brown wires to A and BKX (A on terminal block on coin chute; BKX in upper housing where dial cord connects)
452B Capacitor: 2 green wires to A and X (terminal block on coin chute)
Resistor to E and X (terminal block on coin chute)

425E Network (placed somewhere in lower housing or outside of the phone):

From TR on terminal block in lower housing to R on the 425E
From W on the hook switch to GN on the 425E
From T in lower housing to B on the 425E
From L in lower housing to C on the 425E
From R on hookswitch to RR on 425E network.

(Nothing connected to L1, L2, G, F, A or K terminals on the network. )

Don't use A on the network. A, E and X are located on the back of the coin chute in the upper housing. There should be brown wires from the transmitter that picks up the sound of the coins on A of this terminal block and BKX where the dial cord connects. Also, two green wires from the 452B on A and X of this terminal block, and two green wires frm the electormagnet at the top of the coin chute connected to A and E.

Hopefully, someone can draw a color-coded diagram showing all these connections.

Here is a photo (#13) borrowed from porticus website. Elecromagnet is in upper left corner of photo. The terminal block with the A, E and X terminals is in the lower left:
