That's making sense, and the cords are really much more comfortable in use than the old 302 cords.

And the question was not silly at all  ;)

  I knew this would be the place to ask !    I actually found a copy of that Bell Labs discussion in a pile of stuff I have in a folder on my confuser.
  I also had another collector , a long retired Western Electric employee call me (He doesn't have a computer just a smart phone) , and told me that he was at a meeting in the  late 40s early 50s
that was about the soon to come "plastic" coiled cords and that they  would have four conductors because the machinery to make them just worked better that way and they also would keep their shape better ! He thinks he might have some notes and if he finds will mail to me. Hopefully when I get home soon they will be there and I will post on the forum.
 So it looks like having a four wire cord had several pluses !
Maybe , just maybe, the folks at Bell Labs and WECo knew what they were doing   ;)
