New forum members are very welcome and encouraged to take a guess. After all, there are no wrong guesses, just one lucky one. No one knows the winning bid on any auction until it ends. However, it is important to get your guess in before someone else grabs your guess.

Listed about a day ago in a 7 day auction with no reserve and starting at $19.95 ( with thanks to Jim S. for the tip ) is a turn of the century Stromberg Carlson "Kansas City" model Candlestick.  The seller provided only external pictures showing the phone in good condition, including the embossed faceplate. Since being listed, the phone has received 6 bids from 5 buyers pushing the price up to $102.50 but it will go higher. So, once again, the question is raised of who best knows what this candlestick will sell for when the auction ends?

NOTE:  We will use a $7 gap rule between guesses to prevent crowding. As such, keep your guess at least $7 away from prior guesses for this contest. All guesses, original and a single allowed revised guess if needed, must be submitted at least 24 hours before the auction ends.

The seller listed it as a "1904 Stromberg Carlson "Kansas City" model Candlestick Embossed Faceplate" with the item condition as "Used" and " - - -  " and with the auction listing description saying "You are bidding on a Stromberg Carlson "Kansas City" model candlestick that was first introduced in 1904.  It is often referred to as the "Kansas City" type candlestick because advertisements for the phone depicted Kansas City.  The Stromberg Carlson receiver is dated 1894, no chips or cracks in the bakelite sleeve, the nickel plated parts and over all condition of the phone is exceptionally  good.  --  What makes this particular phone unique is the Teledex (phone directory) candlestick attachment to the base.  There is a small knob on a drawer that pulls out to access the Teledex which has never been used.  I included a picture of the green felt covering the base of the telephone.  --  This phone has not been tested to work and came out of a recently purchased collection.  --  Please review the pictures closely as they are the best description of this rare and collectible candlestick telephone.  Please ask any questions before bidding on this item."

And the winner of Auction Contest #279 is TelePlay, who with the 9th entry into the contest offered the winning guess of $650.00. That guess gave him his twentieth auction contest win moving him up one rung in the Contest Standings.

The phone started at $19.95 and rose steadily over the first 6 days to $183 where it sat until the final hours of the auction. About two and a half hours before end time it rose to $235 but it wasn't until the last 40 seconds until the fun began. 10 bids from 5 buyers pushed it up quickly and when the dust settled, when the computer had a chance to catch up to 7 bids placed within the last 9 seconds (and one which was right at end time - 0 seconds to go), it was 7***y ( 710 ) whose first and only bid placed 5 seconds before the auction ended who took the phone home for $603.00. The auction saw 12 bidders placing 23 bids.

Thanks again to all who played. As always, there is only one way to get on the winner's board or move up a rung - you have to play to win.
