Title: Serial number on early plastic 302 housings
Post by: poplar1 on December 21, 2012, 03:39:22 PM
Is there a list of numbers found on 1941 thermoplastic housings? Are these serial numbers or lot numbers or what?

Here is one dated 10 17 41:  20868

I had one, it was in this thread about shrinking thermplastic.

These were 1941 thermoplastic trials that WE did while still making metal 302s. The one I had was date 7/31/41. They are quite cool but usually cracked or severely shrunken...Doug

I'm pretty sure my 460 has a serial number like that.  I'll take a look tomorrow and if it does, I'll take a picture.

Are these "Bell System" phones or ones issued outside the Bell System, maybe military?

The 10/41 set has a Bell System handset. Large numbers for date and other number are now white and on the inside bottom edge of this housing.

I made a list at one time of my observations of these numbers on ebay phones, from those here in the forum, or where ever...
I have one 1941 plastic housing too, late, like 11/41 or so, and by then it appears to me, these numbers were much smaller.

I sorted the numbers I had by dates  on the housing or base, but the correlation was not consistent, IIRC.  I will try to find that data....

I don't see any correlation either:

7 31 41  21790
8 14 41  26868
10 17 41 20868

Experimenting with alternate materials, preparing for a possible world conflict ?
I have always been under the impression, that the United States knew the attack on Pearl Harbor was coming ? If that material is Nitrocellulose, isn't that critical in Bomb making, the excess shrinkage, and cracking sounds like Nitrocellulose ?

You are about 75 years behind of my post. Bomb as in dropped from an airplane, not  CAR BOMB.

The only way they could be serial numbers is if they started with  99999 and worked backwards to 00001.  This would be unlikely.  Possible, but unlikely.
