Title: Happy Fourth of July!
Post by: Dennis Markham on July 04, 2009, 12:16:35 PM
To everyone celebrating the Independence of our Country, Happy 4th of July! It seems like we were just talking about the "Bi-Centennial" and now it has been thirty-three years since then.  Time DOES fly when one is having fun!

A belated Canada Day to our Canadian friends who celebrated across the border on July 1st.  Not wanting to slight the rest of our readers from other Countries, I hope you all have a great day too wherever you are and whatever you're doing on this day.

The attached photo is a re-post of the photo I posted for President's Day a few months ago.   A piece of Americana courtesy of Western Electric.

Thanks Dennis! Happy Fourth Everyone!  I was about to start a thread about fun memories of past Fourth of July celebrations, so I'll just put them here.

My earliest memory was the parade in Watsonville, Calif. in 1962.  It was a big classic marching band, all scarlet and gold and lot's of brass instruments, horses, cannon, the whole shebang.  The parade scene in the movie "East of Eden" is actually very close to what we saw and was filmed in Watsonville around 1954.

In our small home town just north of Watsonville the tradition was for the volunteer fire department to collect scrap wood and cardboard from all over town and build a HUGE bonfire on the beach, and torch it off on the night of the Fourth. Of course as mischievous kids we had our own tradition of sneaking up to the huge fire and nonchalantly tossing in a cherry bomb or two that we had been saving all year and then running like heck before the big explosions and flying sparks. Dangerous as heck, naturally, and of course the fire department all knew it was us doing it, but they let it ride as part of the celebrations...

Nowadays we are a bit lower key here in Mendocino, with a parade with the usual goat-pulled carts piloted by kids in costume, and the "All Susan Marching Band" which consists of all women in town named Susan playing kazoos.  And of course the fire department with all trucks with sirens blaring.  And they still allow small bonfires on the beach in the evening with a fire truck standing nearby just in case...

Anyways, Happy Fourth to All.

Now that Dennis started the fireworks showing his beautiful collection for red, white and blue sets, I decided to take a picture at some of my sets.

I also attached a couple of dial cards. Free to anyone who likes them.

Gee I wanna be in Mendocino for the 4th, a goat cart parade and a Susan Kazoo Band with bonfires on the beach, pretty fun stuff.  Here in my Central Valley town we try not to melt, supposed to 101 degrees today, and we have a little fireworks show at the park.

My most dramatic 4th of July memory was in Oklahoma back in 73', we were visiting my grandparents place and us boys were setting off bottle rockets.  We of course managed to set grandpas roof on fire with a stray rocket that went wild, never seen people get on a roof with garden hoses so fast!

To this day I still worry about my roof being set on fire on the 4th.  (it's wood shake shingles)

Is'nt it curious and interesting how many nations have some sort of independence/nationhood/patriotic celebration in the summer?

People revolt in the summer because they're hot and cranky.

Happy 4th to everybody, and here's hoping you've done something fun today!

It seems difficult to believe that it's been a year already since I posted this photo.  For lack of a new one I'll post it again here.

I hope everyone in the U.S. of A. is having an enjoyable Fourth of July holiday.

Thanks to all of the women and men in the military serving to keep our Country free.  I am grateful to all of those that gave their lives, and those that returned home from past service so that we may all enjoy the freedoms that we have today.

Happy independence day everyone and God bless you all and God Bless America
I heard that the government is gonna take that off of money. And bless those serving in our military fighting to keep this great nation free.

I went to a friends house a while back and I said to his Dad,"I am Kenny its nice to meet you". And he looked up and said"You will either be a preacher or a politician by the way you talk". I still am not sure how i should have taken it. I just did smiled and walked away.

Terry:

The clock is actually a weather station. But it shows:

day of the week (Sunday=111111, Monday=222222, etc) + AM/PM + Leap Year Indicator + Leap Second Indicator + Daylight Savings Time Indicator 1 and 2 + Locked to WWVB transmitter Indicator.

date (MMDDYY style)
time (12 hour format)
temperature (in degrees Fahrenheit)
barometric pressure (in milli-bars)
humidity (in percent)

You can see more about it here:
http://picasaweb.google.com/Amelyenator/NixieClock#

There is a video at the end of the album that shows all the things it displays.

I should have known that you would have the complete "Consumer 'Jorge Amely' Reports" article including video on your Picasa site!

I went through the "Telephones in the movies" discussion today and there in the middle of it was a picture of an AE34 with the SAME nixie weather station in the background! Almost as though the AE34 picture was taken at your house (yes I know it was).

Starting this up a couple of days early. Like last year, we are at our vacation place in Point Roberts Washington. There is a huge presence of Canadians here as Pt Roberts is detached from continental USA but attached to the Greater Vancouver area. It is a 23 mile drive through Canada from Blaine Washington to Pt Roberts Washington.

So this year the marina here is doing a fireworks display both today July 1 Canada day and it will continue on July 4. Nice touch! We just got back from watching the first instalment.

Happy Canada Day to all of the Canadians on CRPF and Coming Soon - Happy July 4 to all American Citizens!

Just wishing everyone a happy and safe 4th of July.

I will celebrate by  practicing "Civil Disobedience " . I will be   sneaking into my local  regional park to catch the fireworks show.
This is the first year  they started closing "Palmer Park"*  in Colorado Springs @ 9:00 vs the typical 11 PM  summer park closing.
It takes me around 15 minutes to walk/hike  to the main overlook, I expect to see quite a few of my neighbors there as well.

Happy Holiday,
Jim S.

*This is a 750 acre park in the middle of town. I live 1 block away and about 1/2 mile from the access, my neighborhood is an urban interface area, (High wildfire risk and lots of animals wandering the neighborhood).

(Earlier today I noticed that they didn't open the vehicle access to the  main overlook today).

Well, I almost didn't have a safe 4th!

My family was lighting off fireworks tonight, and one rocket was strapped to a sparkler sitting in a ceramic vase. Long story short, we ended up watching a huge fireworks explosion on the ground instead of in the sky, with ceramic shrapnel flying everywhere! Fortunately, no one was hurt, but we learned that we should never use a sparkler as a rocket launch stick ever again! :o

It seems like each year, each site I belong to has someone have something happen they learn from.  I not seen any of them come for a return engagement, so they must have learned well.  Thanks for sharing.  These are good lessons.  As I write this, I can hear an idiot using their firearm as a firework.

And especially if they shoot up, the laws of physics mean that the velocity as it approaches the ground is nearly the same as it was coming out of the gun...  Which often means an innocent bystander somewhere could be in the "line of fire" and not even know it...

Everyone have a safe rest of the weekend, especially the folks having to get on the road and drive!

Here's the carnage this morning after the fireworks last night!

The first picture shows the spot where the vase with the rocket was, and you can see the white ash and pieces of ceramic everywhere! The ceramic flew as far as 100 feet; I can't believe no one got hit with any of it!

Did you see these? We were sitting so close we just leaned back in our chairs and the whole sky was filled with light. So close, we felt the concussion before we heard the sound of those large aerial bombs. Yeah, that close. Here are a few shots from the night ( the sky filling displays were to bright to photograph ). Only danger there were the multiple flying Frisbees and footballs.

The slight breeze during the show was from left to right as seen in the gold colored effects in some photos. It as not the camera being moved.

Safer than the fellow in Calais, Maine who set a mortar on top of his head, lit the firework, causing injuries which resulted in his death.

To him, I offer the following epitaph: "Rocket Man (I Think It's Going To Be A Long Long Time) And I'm gonna be high as a kite by then - I miss the earth so much I miss my wife - It's lonely out in space On such a timeless flight...."

Darwinian Awards aside, I hope all of you had a much safer and happier Holiday than he did!

I'm off but I get holiday pay.  Not to be confused with vacation pay.  My wife's Canadian and when she wants to talk about my "holiday" dates, I get confused, and the conversation turns into a kind of "Who's On First?"

Me: "Which one, you mean today?"
Her: "No, I mean the one you're taking in July."
Me: "Well, that's today, July 4th is a holiday."
Her: "It starts today?!! I thought you said it was the last two weeks in July?!!"
Me:  "No, my vacation starts the last two weeks in July.  Today is just a holiday".
Her: "I'm not asking about today!"
Me:  "Then what are you asking about?"
Her:  "Your holiday!!"
Me:  "That's today."
Her: "Never mind, would you pour me some coffee please?"
