OK, I know its not technically a telephone, so moderators feel free to move this if necessary, but . . .

Here's the pair of Phonemate 400 answer machines I picked up on Kijiji very recently. Haven't had time to see if either unit works yet, but hopefully should be able to get one workable machine out of the two.

The Phonemate claims to be the first ever consumer-level answer machine, coming out in 1971. These units were not mains powered but rather take D-cell batteries. There was also an add-on box one could get to remotely access your messages using a specific tone-generator.

Should look great next to a later-model 500 on my desk.

I have the 800s version of this.Have not had it hooked up in years. There is a website somewhere that advertised NOS ones for sale $35.00?. Was a pain to rewind the message reel when full .
