Title: BK Precision 1045/1050 Telephone Tester - Sightings!
Post by: AE_Collector on July 30, 2014, 10:33:04 PM
Maybe a bit Self Serving as I am looking for a BK Precision 1045/1050 Tester hopefully at a Bargain Price but looking through the various posts here on CRPF there is likely always someone watching for one to show up.

So, I will make this topic easy to find, Sticky up near the top of the Teleohone Tools Board. Anyone who has one that they no longer need or want OR any sightings on eBay or elsewhere that are a reasonable price should be posted here for whomever happens to be looking for one at the time.

At any given moment in time they are listed on eBay but typically they seem quite high priced. There are four 1045ís on eBay at the moment ranging from $165 to $300 and there is one 1050 (located in Israel) for $169 but shipping to North America is $139. So, no need to post them all here, maybe just 1045ís priced at $100 or lower and 1050ís that are $150 or lower. 1045ís have been seen selling for  $50-$60 and 1050ís for $100 over the last couple of years.

we should have a shorter link and photos.  Otherwise, when the eBay photos expire, we have no reference,

Isn't there a way to just put the item number after www.ebay.com for a shorter URL?

This one works. You have to have the "itm" before the number.

And a picture.

After he dropped the price, I snagged one of them.  Not dirt cheap, but it should be an easier way to troubleshoot phones.  I have been using a Teletrainer as a line simulator, but this should be more accurate and more convenient.  Thanks for pointing it out; If I hadn't joined this forum, I wouldn't have known that such a thing existed.

I paid about $50 a couple of years ago. I keep an eye on them on eBay & like Terry said most of the sellers are asking close to $300. I don't know if they are selling though.

Two BK1050ís (with no guarantees) have just landed on eBay at $95 each (plus shipping) with the ability to make an offer as well. They are on the east coast of USA in New Jersey. Shipping to me shows at $96.55 each so I am going to pass.

If anyone else is looking for one maybe your shipping wonít be as bad.

Yep; saw them the second they were listed, and thought of snagging both, but thought I'd leave them to others that really need one. Of the 6 or 7 that I have purchased (all on eBay), I have found that if they light up when you turn them on, they work just fine! But, as always, "Buyer beware"....

Ouch! A one way airplane ticket can be had for much less than that and the 1050 could then enjoy the views out the window and order a meal with drinks as well! And of course it could then pack a free 50 pound / 23kg suitcase of telephones to test once it arrives at your place Dag! You can probably purchase this one in Israel for much less shipping expense:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/202159936979

I guess I could make an offer of maybe $30 so my shipped cost is $125 on one of these in NJ but I have to assume that making that offer would just be a waste of a few more minutes of my life.

Okay, if that is accepted (or if you have to go to $60) ask if they want to sell them both at that price and if you donít mind I will get you to ship it to me. Shipping wonít be cheap but it wonít be $96 either. I donít know what they weigh, could be a bit and it would be to 98281 in Washington State. This way you would get to pick the best one as well.

I'm happy to be able to report that two members of the forum are now 1050 owners.
These are the $95 +shipping eBay units we were all drooling over..
We were able to snap them up for...(drum roll please..........)
$65 ea!!!!!
I picked them up at the warehouse which happened to be only 5 mins away from my NJ shore office.

Got them home and did a few quick tests.

Ring current, dial tone, side tone, modulation indication, DTMF, and pulse detection all working,

I guess it's true, if they turn on there is a good chance it'll work.

What a deal Jon ...$65 and NO shipping! Find of the Month material Iím thinking? The second one is heading west...WAY west and north a little as well. Iím hoping that shipping isnít going to be much more than $60-$65 but we will see what the actual damage is once Jon gets it packed up for me.

This isnít the first time Iíve been helped out but club members ďin the right placeĒ close to something Iíve wanted. And Iím certain there are numerous other examples of this in the club as well. Itís sure nice to all have the same interests and then help each other other out with those interests.

I needed to quickly get some idea what shipping was going to cost to determine if I was In or Out of this deal. Jon posted here asking for dimensigns and weight to which Teleplay very quickly had the answer and so I decided to go for it. Thanks Jon and John!

Thanks so much to Jon for grabbing them both and for the extra effort to ship one of them on to me.

That is just fantastic, and for the good feeling so much cheaper than the $1200 it would have been for me to get it here to Norway. (witch actually is completely insane and close to a political statement we do not want that kind of trade  But I am not sure about it that is Norwegian or US  or both politicians to blame...)

In reality I donít know what extra features in the 1050 I will ever use or even be able to figure out how to use. And, the 1045 would use much less desk space as well. I am surprised that there isnít a dial speed or make/break read out function in these as well. But, it is what it is!

The 1045 is easy to use. It gives a display of the digit dialed, either by rotary or tone phone. You can check transmit, via an led on the front that reacts to the sound in the transmitter, it can ring phones, even adds resistance to simulate long loops.
You can test answering machines, by connecting another set in the second Jack, you press ring hear the ring back tone in the receiver, wait till the machine answers. Leave a message and go on hook. It also provides polarity reverse for the older touch tone phones. It checks 4P4C line cords, for 1or 2 line function. It tests modular handset cords for pin out on all four pins, let's you see if one or more is open on either line or handset cord tests. A very versatile unit. It does not test break rate, but I have noticed if a dial runs really slow, it will not display a digit. Same if it's too fast. So it may have that to tell you that the dial failed.
I have bought some on e bay, that don't work. I had one that if I pressed ring, it would once, then click there after.
I opened it and figured out the timer was "bouncing". It needed a small capacitor to stop the bounce, so I put one in and it worked perfectly. I got lucky.
But there is dangerous voltages inside, the ring generator puts out a healthy 130 volts. It will get your attention is you touch it.

Post by: Sigmaz on April 19, 2018, 04:13:48 PM
Yep thats the short list of the 1050's capabilities as well.

The 1050 also has a battery of wonderfully useless RF tests for checking and aligning 46 and 49 mhz analog cordless phones and bases.

Those features will probably never be used on my 1050.. There are also a bunch of features to utilize a scope and what not.. again semi useless.

But one neat thing I found is that you can also have it continuously ring which is a fine option for testing ring circuits without the ring current cycling on and off.

...or if you need a 20hz 130v power source for HV projects...lol

Post by: Key2871 on April 19, 2018, 05:37:28 PM
True, a continuous ring voltage would be good for "tuning up " a ringer. And for the price point when I got my 1045 versus buying a 1050, well I couldn't justify the price difference.

Wow, $65 for a 1050. Well I've always said flea bay is driving prices down. When I got my 1045, a 1050 was an easy $5/600, for a good used one. Now , well now they are cheap as dirt. Congrats to the recipients, you got a great deal.

Iím not sure if it was the eBay effect but more so the fact that this company deals with reselling used high end bench equipment and the 1050ís were archaic worthless devices in their eyes.

After all, why would anyone need a 30 year old telephone analyzer in todayís day and age?

Well last I looked on the bay, people were selling what looked to be nothing less than dumpster finds with missing buttons, broken displays and grungy cases for big bucks. Don't know if they sold or not. But it was a pair, for some crazy price of $95. I wouldn't even consider those. Old, Yea. But those 1050's you picked up look nice, compared to what I have seen available. And that price... Wow nice find.

DSK, if you're patient, one of those BK-1045's should come available for under $100. I'm out of BK-1050's & 1045's or else I'd send ya one!  Used to keep 3 or 4 around just for that purpose, and take them to phone shows to sell to other collectors.

Thank you thats nice.
I have just made an offer for a 1050  ($100) and I m wondering how it will work on 50Hz
I have 2 ways to power it: 1 A 50VA 110V inverter  60 Hz made for old laptop, or just a s30-115V transformer putting out 50Hz as we have on our mains.  None of these will give me a Neutral bonded to Ground/earth, but I may ground it if that is a must.
Our strange power here has 230V not related to eart/ground. In Europe known as IT system. https://goo.gl/3vgl8

Thank you, now I have to make a complaint: to fast shipping :o , the parcel arrived at the post office friday, and I wnt of on a weekend to our cabin in southern Norway.   ;D

I picked it up and powered it on 115 V, it starts up and looks OK, 2 knobs, and a leg is missing, but I have whats needed. The left meter was pressed in to the cabinet, but was easy to put back.  I will put in a 230 centertapped transformer and change cord/plug and then it is probably OK. Maybe a little cleaning too.

Now I am at the cabin, all snow is gone, but there have not been any leaves on the trees yet. Sunny and nice, but still cold.  Not more than 9 deg C.

Glad to hear you finally got one!

Yeah, silly how the meters are held into the openings.
Just a little spring tang piece which is easily pushed back and bent out of shape.

Iíve recently seen photos of another 1050 with the meters displaced.
It wasnít until I had my own that I realized they werenít damaged but just out of sorts.

This thread and being the happy owner of the telephone tester made me share some feelings.

I probably shouldn't, but I kinda feel sorry when some stops with this hobby.  (as I read about in other threads)
Others will bring it further, but this hobby has been a good and important part of my life, and I wish that for you too. I have to admit that collecting is so important, but understanding how things are, being able to get them working, tuning dials and ringers.  I have no intention to be the European Steve Hilsz, but guiding other members trough the process of tuning, or fault-finding is fun, and my English are slowly getting better.
The best experience for my ego was when another European member sent me a phone for repair, and I did not know anything before the parcel came. That member has been my best friend on this forum! And her I only have good friends.  Thank you, all of you!

Just checked with my search tool, It's good to see there is never a shortage of over priced haggard out 1045's out there.

It's not like hunting for a Sage 930.. at least they look like they are worth big bucks.

Very nice post DSK!  I too have several very good, life-long friends that I have met through telephone collecting; it IS a very special hobby indeed.

PS: I sure wish we all knew each other's "real" names on here; of course, maybe some of you like it just the way it is! ;-)

Warm regards to all,

Agreed, well said dsk. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and together we all help each other with our hobby. I know that if I have a problem with a circuit or need to design something to make something else work, Dag (dsk) will almost certainly draw something up and help out from 9 time zones away.

Many use their real names and others don't. I have my handle but almost always sign with my first name. To each their own, no set requirements in this area. I've often thought that a "button" by our screen name and Avatar would be a nice forum feature that when pushed would reveal the real name of a member ONLY if the member has agreed to this in his account set up AND if the member pushing the button is logged in. Just as a quick reminder of who is who. My memory is short! Of course there is the CRPF Criss Cross directory that I need to update again soon.

Dag, I lived in Carinthia, Austria for while as you maybe remember. In regional accent the Ś is pronounced same, like an O. For example the city of Klagenfurt, pronounced KlŚgenfuat in Carinthian dialekt. So I always pronounced StŚle like Stole :)

My real name, well, no real secret but leads to missinterpretations by english speaking people. Glad my family name isn't "Dawn"

A new BK1045 listed today at a better price. Opening bid $60 or BIN $85. Free shipping within the US makes it a ďdealĒ I would say.

Is everything normal on the back of this one? Several holes in plastic but nothing there? Power cord upper right side I guess.

I bought a couple like that years ago, got burned on one, the second one didn't work at first, but I replaced a capacitor and it worked perfectly.

Hi all,
This is my first post but I've been lurking on the site for about a year.

I grabbed the 1050 while the grabbing was good  :D

I've got the 1045A and also the RS tester. Haven't been on for over a week and just happened to check in today and saw this. I couldn't believe it was still available at that price.

The good news is a site member got it. The bad news is another site member didn't get it.

Well at least a member got it. Unusually good deal. I have the 1050 and the RS tester.

My RS tester is giving me grief, function selection buttons flakey...now these ones work, later some others donít. One of those flat plastic strips that pushes into a connector. Cleaned it and reinserted but still flakey. If anyone has a RS tester with different problems let me know, you can have mine for shipping cost.

I have been wanting to ask this question forever..... what do you use these for?

I have been refurbing telephones for almost 40 years and have never needed anything besides another line....and spare parts. In the beginning I had two POTS lines. When we went to Comcast (we now have Verizon) I purchased a Panasonic 616. Still have it....runs like a champ. I bought a 308 as a back years ago at a yard sale...finally sold it. The 616 is great! Just keeps on running. I use it on my test bench and for my rotary phones to play in the world outside my home.

I am confident that when I refurb a phone and say it works...it works, unless the carrier does not support rotary dial.

What am I missing by not owning one of these?  This is a sincere question and not meant to be confrontational. ...thanks...Doug

I've not seen the BK 1050 for sale in the UK (I do keep a lookout though) but I bought a similar thing, I got it to gauge the pulses on dials. I have a box or two of dials which need fixing up. It will come in handy where any dial needs attention, especially the phones I buy in France as those older dials are very often in need of repair and the calibration is all over the place.

This is the version I have:

'BT line tester 422a designed to test telephone lines by dividing the line and the exchange line circuit thus giving total control, designed to work to the exchange neg 50v supply or 240v ac mains. MF tones are detected by the built in detector and indicated on a led display, dial speed and ratio tests can be carried out'.

Hey Doug;

The BK 1050 & 1045 basically can emulate a telephone line. You simply plug-in the phone that you want to test, and push the "RING" button. You can even plug-in a 2nd (working) phone (plugged into #2) and ring it to emulate calling another phone to mimic a "real" phone call from one of your phones to another. I even use mine to test my straight-line ringers. They will also test whether a dial is dialing a number correctly, and if a keypad is dialing correctly. The 1050 can even test the early "wireless" phones, but I have never had an occasion to use that ability.

No doubt a Panasonic PBX or other type of equipment can confirm the functionality of most phones. It is probably just slightly quicker and easier to have the tester right in front of you on the bench. Being the original price of these units was so high I would suspect they are set to fairly tight tolerances. So while a PBX might process a call from a phone it could be that the same phone might not work on some other piece of switching equipment that had tighter tolerances. Theoretically a phone that passes the BK tester should likely work on any (most) other system. All my theories though....

With a 1045/1050 and radio shack tester you can test a modular telephone including cords in less than a minute.
The 1045's and the radio shack testers had a price of around $500 when new.

the 1050 looks cooler, it does everything a 1045 does plus it has a meter vs lights when you are testing transmission. The rest of the 1050 is for cordless phones. I think the new price was a lot higher than the 1045.
I prefer a 1045 over the 1050 as far as convenience .

Dough you are right about the most here, you are not missing much, I spent money on tester, and yes it makes it more easy to perform the tests, but for me it is more fun than without it.
You may display the digits on the tester, but have to call different lines on the Panasonic. You are able to monitor what voltage needed to get ringer ringing with the tester, that is not possible with the Panasonic, you have to add components to test that on the Panasonic. The testers are still pretty much a go or not go tester. To calibrate a dial you need to have some equipment for analyzing the pulses, make break ratio, and speed.  This is easily done with free software and a the microphone input on the PC, or you may use dedicated instrument for that.   The drawback (when testing) with the Panasonic is that it works with telephones fare out of spec. On the other hand, this is the great strength with the Panasonic for use with the same telephones.
The tester has a go/not go LED for sound modulation, this test will usually be OK done by calling to another phone and talking...

I have been looking on pretty many Youtube films about telephone repair, and one person "named" A1 telephone repair use a tester all the time, this shows how easy it is by using one, but on the other hand; my guess is that he sends out phones with dials not working well on the most critical ATA's

Hi Doug,
I know you have your question already answered, but I need the test equipment because I don't have a landline coming into my home and I'm not about to bring one in. I actually have the RS tester, the BK Precision 1045A and now the 1050 and two Panasonic 616s...and I hate to admit this but the two 616s are still out on my porch in the shipping boxes. I'll probably keep all of it for now, but I suspect I'll probably part with some of it as I get settled into a system to test phones....and also whether I have a steady supply of phones to sell as part of my surplus business...not to mention the ones I keep.
So anyway...still trying to figure all of this out and the best route for me to go.

Hi All, just so theres no confusion the 1050 is a decent piece of equipment, however it WILL NOT and SHOULD not be considered accurate for any pulse dialing period.  that should be done on a 930a with options 01 and 13 would be "generally" required for any hobbiest working on, restoring, repairing old telsets.  So net is all what your tring to test, but for rotary dial testing, the BKs mentioned are not what you want period.

Do you mean PDF document Page 49 which is Chapter 3 Page 1 of the Manual (3-1)?

I tried to attach the manual last night but kept getting a system stack overflow, white screen, the 26 MByte document was too large for the forum security check software.

Section 3.1 describes what the unit can do. It is all outgoing cable tests, you can send various dial tones/pulses, but the machine doesn't test telephones. You cannot change the dial settings with the instrument.

Ya...I know. But thanks for pointing that out. I posted the sale link because this part of the forum is for 1045/1050 sightings. I hope that people that are looking for one knows what either piece of equipment can or cannot do....but...for an absolute newbie...it is nice that this is mentioned in case someone gets all starry eyed by all the "things" on the front of the 1050 thinking it would do "everything."

With that said...I'm kind of on the hunt for a Sage 930a now to test dials. Like I said...kind of. The $$$ is a tad tight for me right now.

Thanks for the post and the follow up posts.

Considering the new cost and sophistication of the 1050 in particular, I am surprised that it doesnít have more capability in judging dial pulses. It has an adjustment for the ringing voltage so you can see how a Ringer does with lower or higher ring voltage.  A tolerance adjustment for the display that shows what digits you have dialed would give you some idea how accurate the dial speed is even if it canít indicate make/break ratios.

So far I live well with 1050 and this: https://goo.gl/jr2dAK.
In case of having a dial with long last pulse the audacity is great, but that is not often needed.
