Title: Barn Fresh Telephones
Post by: TelePlay on December 20, 2015, 04:03:04 PM
These have been listed on the forum over the years but they are all over the place. This topic will be a place to note those "barn fresh" phones either purchased or spotted for sale anywhere. Doesn't take much to describe what qualifies, just look at the first phone listed. This should become a slowly growing repository of very sad phones.

Post them as you find them here, when and wherever you find them, and if anyone actually buys one of them, before and after photos for the Notable Refurbs (Back from the Dead) (http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=11814.0) topic are required.

I'll start the topic off with this two piece wall phone currently on eBay at $15.50 by way of 5 bids which only "needs some TLC!"

I've seen phones with a "Mother-in-Law Receiver" but that first one seems to have a "Mother-in-Law Transmitter"!

Had I been able to fins a AE34 in that condition and at a good price, it sure wouldn't look like that by the time I was done with it....

Timely topic.

This morning I got into work and there was a new barn-fresh AE 50 on my desk!  The boss's boss is in the process of getting his father in law into assisted living and was clearing out the old guy's garage.  The boss remembered I collect phones.

When I called him to thank him he asked me if it was any good or should he have just thrown it away.  It is in great shape.  The handset is a little worn and dull, but no cracks or chips.  I think it will clean up nicely.

Two days after it arrived, it didn't look like that any more....

Dave:
I am trying to remember, was the AE 34 from the guy in Oregon that got the load of AE phones from the Electronic Recycling Centre (Center for those south of the 49th) :)

Bill:
Does your handset have metal bands or grooved Bakelite "bands"? An earlier version of the AE 50 if the handset is original to it.

He worked for the Centre. Yes. It was the worst of the ones he had.... I got it for a good price, and with a brand new extensicord.... Cleaned up nicely.

Phonesrfun post another "barn fresh" phone in December of 2010 that is dirty enough to qualify for this topic.

And this "barn fresh" gem was found by Dennis Markham in March of 2013 and is well photographed, along with his restoration of the phone, in his Picasa Album (https://picasaweb.google.com/vintagerotaryphones/KelloggModelDK500). This phone is listed in the Notable Topic (http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=11814.msg125687#msg125687).

Here was a soft Red 500 I found awhile back. It was the first phone I have ever found where the mold was actually etched into the plastic! I think it was only growing on the receiver cap because of skin oils left over when it was put into storage. Wherever it was stored, it wasn't exactly kept dry...

A little Clorox and polish later, it didn't turn out too badly...

What can one say? ( head shake ) Rare white with corner crack . . .  okay . . .

The seller said " TRUE VINTAGE - WESTERN ELECTRIC SOLID METAL - HEAVY TELEPHONE - WHITE BASE WITH BLACK RECEIVER - MISSING THE MOUTH COVER - CRACK IN THE FRONT RIGHT CORNER - UNTESTED - SHIPS QUICKLY & CAREFULLY FROM USA"

Certainly barn fresh, with issues . . .

The seller has marked it down to $133.49

http://www.ebay.com/itm/361476824300

with $14.95 shipping.

I made the seller a very generous offer of $5.05 to make it a total of $20 to my doorstep. The offer was rejected. It's still listed but the sale price will expire in a bit more than a day so the price will go back up to it's original $149.99. Oh, well . . .

Got myself this Kellogg red bar.
It was literally in a barn. I picked it up myself.

EDIT: Since this phone generated a long discussion, was taking on a life of its own, the discussion posts were split off and posted in General Discussion at this link:

The phones in this box are all dirty but look at that one in the lower right. That's not paint, it fungus or bird crap or other nasty stuff. I always pick up a 302 to see if there's anything interesting about it but not this time.

That happens when you keep your phone next to your anthrax work bench.

Its mold...happens to some phones stored in a damp area, others are fine. Like the box with a couple with mold, I had a box of 302s stored and when I opened them, black and white like these,. Are they for sale?.....Doug

It is the soft plastic sets that mold. Once AE went to hard plastic they continued to use soft plastic for the dial number ring and some sets will be okay in storage except the number ring is white with mold!

Are they for sale?.....Doug

They were a few days ago. The owners name is on a white piece of paper on the box. His first name is David, can't make out the last name but I didn't try too hard.

Very easy to put name together. It is on inside of the box at the top of the picture beside the logo and on the outside of the box at the bottom.

I won it on Ebay cheap hoping it was usable.... but as the photo shows, it was a mess... the water had done so much damage that not even the keyset was salvageable. what a shame.... if I remember correctly.... I did save the ringer, capacitor and some other parts.... "
